Help me with a GTX 280

So I just upgraded my computer a couple weeks ago, and this week I decided to upgrade my EVGA 8800 GTS to a EVGA GTX 280 1GB. I figured more power is better right?

Well it's not working so well, first of all this card is rediculous loud. As soon as I load COD 4 its fan is at 100%. I barely here the freakin TV it's so loud.

2nd after playing for about 20-30 minutes the screen craps out and the computer will reboot. This is has never happened before so I know it's the video card.

Is this normal for this card to be so loud and why is it restarting all the time. I'll put my equipment down below.

Do I even need this thing to run games at 1360x768 resolution, that's the best my HDTV will do so perhaps I don't even need it?

Here are some specs....

Asus P5BE QX9450, 8GB of RAM, couple hard drives, 1 DVD, plus a small RAID controller. The P/S is a Corsair TX650

I have a screen shot, and the EVGA Precision utility is showing fan speed at 94%, and the temp at 106 degrees C. My processor at the time was only running at 117 Degrees F.

What do you think?

Those symptoms (max fan speed and very high temps) seem quite similar to the ones that a few other people have experienced with defective GTX280s. It would probably be best just to RMA it and have them send over a new one.

I don't know that I would have upgraded from a 8800 GTS at all if I were running 1360x768 though. Did you find it inadequate 😕?

RMA it. There have been a Rash of bad GTX 280's that shoot up to past 100 degree's C.

RMA for sure. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Argh, another defective one.

Same thing happened to me.

RMA time, or return/exchange time.

I'm not blaming them per-se. It just seems like theirs seem to be top on the list lately.

I'm still having a rough time deciding between the GTX 260 and HD4870. I have heard the 4870 dominates, but I'll always be an Nvidiot.

I have found that XFX cards have the best reputation for the quality of their Nvidia cards. The downside is, no step-up program like EVGA's.

Well FWIW, I have bought at least 50 8800GTS cards from EVGA for work, and I have NEVER had one go bad. So perhaps this is an early adopter issues that they will work out.

Well yes, that's what we're all assuming. Just manufacturing kinks they have to work out, as it is with any next-gen card release.
