Which is correct?

"Something to that effect."

or

"Something to that affect."

I always thought it was the latter but a coworker swears it is the former.

It'd generally be effect. Affect, as a noun, generally refers to your disposition...so I guess you could technically use it and be correct in a rare instance or two.

I guess that is probably true. I have used it both ways before.

Then you're wrong.

Something to that affect.

Affect - Obsolete. A disposition, feeling, or tendency.

**EDIT**

Apparently, I was wrong Something to that Effect

Also, OP google is your friend. Look up "Something to that Effect" in quotes.

You owned yourself.
admitting error and correcting yourself does not equate to owning oneself.

I know I could use Google but I wanted to know what others thought too.

Also, everything you read on the intarweb isn't true. Just cuz there are results doesn't mean much. Although the googlefight thing was funny.

I believe that both are actually correct depending on what you are trying to say.

There's a really good page out there by Purdue that shows the different uses of the words in ways you've never seen.

But me personally I would use "effect"

-edit-
so in other words, the bet is a push.
