Oh, And Hi. Long time lurker etc.

I have a problem. Windows 98se wasn't cutting the proverbial Mustard, so I whipped out the old credit card and treated Myself to a little upgrade - Windows XP pro and another 512MB Ram to be precise. However, I have now lost 2300 Marks in 3D Mark 2001se, and UT2003 is some kind of stutter king. What's goin' on, anyone have any suggestions?

My System:

Athlon C 1400Mhz
Asus A7A266 Mobo (Using latest ali Integrated Driver)
768MB PC2100 (256MB Smasung, 512MB Crucial)
MSI Geforce 4 ti4200 (It's the MS-8894 64MB Version, clocked at 250/513 - Default Speeds) Running the Nvidia 40.09 ref driver
Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm Hard Disk
Soundblaster Live 5.1
Firewire PCI card
Netgear 10/100 Network Card
Drives and Stuff.

I'm running Dirext X 9.0a, A fresh install (From scratch, no upgrades (yuk)) Of Win XP pro with Service Pack 1. I haven't changed any settings in the BIOS, Device Manager shows no conflicts. Fast Writes is enabled in the Bios, but is not showing up as enabled in 3D mark 2001, and the box will not check in the Ali AGP configuration utility. Latest Drivers and updates etc.

It should be running like greased lightening (Well, nearly), but My 3D marks gone from 8330 to 6096!

Can anyone help me, cause it's a bit disheartening? Cheers.

Have you diabled VSync? It's enabled by default and you need to use a reg hack to be able to access the menu to disable it. Go to http://www.guru3d.com and download the Detonator 40.41 Hidden Features Patch (it's still compatible with the latest Dets). You should be able to find it in the Downloads section under Detonator Drivers.

Make sure you have the proper AGP driver installed. Try NVmax, it has a compatibility fix for the Ali chipset, and one for Athlon and Win2K if I remember correctly.

You should also try overclocking your video card, MSI's usually do very well. I would expect a minimum fo 275/550, maybe 300/600 if you're lucky.

Welcome to Anandtech:)

Being a lurker means he usually just reads the various posts and doesn't bother to respond or post new ones. He's obvious been around for a while, but never needed to register until a time of emergency. :)

This is just a guess by try disabling some services that you are not using. XP PRO runs alot more services than 98se and they're services that you really don't need if your just gaming ie DNS and such. I'm proabably wrong but just trying to help.
