Help me upgrade my i7 920, mobo, ram

I think my mobo blew, so I was going to just go ahead and upgrade mobo, CPU and ram. Maybe upgrade other stuff if needed and get another SSD... I want to buy stuff that is a value... Best bang for the buck type of items.. That's why I just bought the 7850...

I currently have

Asus p6t deluxe v2 (I think it's blown)
i7 920
12gb ocz ps3 12800 (2gb x 6) I could use more since I do video work, after effects, etc...
7850
750w corsair
3 spindle hard drives
1 vertex 3 SSD
Antec nine hundred
Several extra fans
Big CPU cooler with a fan on each side (I forget brand but it was best one at the time to over lock an i7 920)

I use this computer for work mainly and some gaming...

I love speed...
I live in US...

Thanks!

Z77 mobo.
And for your ram. I'm a bit confused.
You said it has 12 gigs but 2x4 isn't 12 😛

Is the warranty on your mobo over already? It's 3 year warranty board.

If you can't RMA it, you could try to grab a used X58 board on ebay. I got my Asus P6T SE for £45 two and a half years ago, it was practically new (I got a lucky 😀)

If you must upgrade, I'd recommend

Gigabyte Z77X-D3H $135
i7-2600K $280 AP (3770K isn't worth another $70, it overclocks a bit worse too)
2x8GB Corsair Dominator 1600MHz $90 AR
--> sell i7-920 and your RAM on ebay

Why not just buy a used 1366 board? You need to test the i7 before you can sell it anyway so you may as well rebuild it into a new computer. Then sell if you want.

I plan on using the old i7 and ram and put something together for my son... So I was just going to get all new upgraded stuff for mine. I need more power anyway for video editing...

But isn't an i7 > i5 for video editing, etc?

Z77X-D3H can Crossfire/SLI. It has PCIe 3.0 @ x16 + PCIe 2.0 @ x8. PCIe 2.0 vs 3.0 is a non issue at this point, it's going to be a long while before 2.0 actually starts limiting graphics card performance noticeably.

PCIe revisions are backwards compatible. You can use a 3.0 card in a 2.0 slot, it'll just use what bandwidth is available. That shouldn't damage the board.

PCIe 3.0 architecture is fully compatible with prior generations of this technology, from software to clocking architecture to mechanical interfaces. That is to say PCIe 1.x and 2.x cards will seamlessly plug into PCIe 3.0-capable slots and operate at their highest performance levels. Similarly, all PCIe 3.0 cards will plug into PCIe 1.x- and PCIe 2.x-capable slots and operate at the highest performance levels supported by those configurations.

Well. All I can say is I think Asus tech support is wrong about that, and that you shouldn't spend an extra $65 on a new motherboard based on the improbability that you're going to SLI/CF and that Asus is right and that the same applies to Gigabyte's boards.

How big of a difference is it between the i7 four core and six core? (when it comes to video editing, etc)

Also, I guess the new chips coming out will require a new motherboard regardless?

Will a CPU cooler I bought for the i7 920 work on all i7's? And will the stock cooler that comes with 2600k work on the i7 920?

It depends on the CPU cooler model whether it's compatible with a particular socket. i7 920 is on socket LGA1366, i7-2600K is on socket LGA1155, and i7-3930K is on socket LGA2011. Different installation brackets are required for each. The stock cooler of 2600K should only work on LGA1155.

But isn't an i7 > i5 for video editing, etc?

Yes, but the difference (15-20%) isn't worth the 50% price hike unless you're making money from your video editing. The i7 3770K is certainly faster, but it's not like the i5 3570K is slow to begin with.

i7-2600K is only about 20% more expensive than i5-3570K, go with that. It also overclocks better than i5-3570K.
