Help me understand the basics.

In all my time here, I still have no idea what a ROP is and what it does. My google-fu seems to be a little rusty as well, so hopefully you guys can explain it to me.
 
A ROP is a raster operator, though there are many other names for it.

It basically takes output from the shaders and coverts it into pixel or depth values. It also performs the resolve for hardware AA.
