Help me understand something on IDE\Ultra DMA 100 hookups on my Asus board

I just got my new Asus A7V133 board in and was looking it over. I noticed there are two connectors for Ultra DMA 100 and two for standard IDE.

I have my new Maxtor DMA-100 drive and then I will also be hooking up a DMA-33 Maxtor as a slave. In addition I have 2 cd-rom drives (one is a cdrw).

The manual says if a drive is not at least DMA-66 it should go on the IDE connector. Does that mean I need to put the DMA-100 drive on the DMA-100 connector by itself? Would it still need to be a master and the other a slave even though they are on different IDE connectors?

Yeah, put the ATA33 drive on the ATA66 controller, and the ATA100 on the other controller...

They use different cables... the ATA66/ATA100 cable is a 80 pin cable, and the ATA33 cable is a 40 pin cable...

you can used the 40 pin cable on your ATA100, but you will only get ATA33 throughput...
 
also if you put an ata33 and an ata100 on the ata100 connector they would run at the slowest speed of the two which would be ata33.
 
Ah, I took what you said and read the manual (imagine that?) and figured out that both the IDE cables they include are 40pin 80conductor cables and are backwards compatible with my ATA33 drive. So here's what I ma gonna do:

Set the ATA100 drive on the ATA100 connector by itself and set it up as master via it's jumper. Set the ATA33 drive up on the IDE Primary connector (non ATA100) but set it up as the slave. Then stick the two cd-roms up on secondary IDE.

Sound like a winner?
 
All the IDE connectors on the A7V133 are ATA100 compliant.

The silkscreens are leftover from the A7V which had ATA100 through the Promise controller and ATA66 from the 686A southbridge. If you've got the 686B southbridge (which I'm 99% all A7V133 have) then the Primary & Secondary from the Via controller are ATA100.

In the BIOS, when you see ATA100 it also is refering to the Promise ports.

Also, the statement about if you have a ATA33 & ATA100 drive on the same channel causing both to work at ATA33 is a myth/holdover from a lot older IDE controllers. Should not be an issue.
