Help me understand offset

Is offset tolerance a range? Reason I am asking is I have a spreadsheet that tells me what size of rim and offset my wife's E350 4Matic can take. I see 17x8 ET38 for Benz rims and the next entry says 17x8ET30 for Brabus.

I always understood you are not supposed to move too far from the offset, maybe +-2 tops without adding spacer...

What the hell am I not getting?

I am trying to score some used rims for summer tires. This will not be driven hard.

Specifically these

My manual says 8Jx16H2ET36

Those rims are ET34, would I be in any danger of damaging the car?

The manufacturer documentation/website/phone number can usually simply be used for reference. Wheel size + tire size is pretty universal on all vehicles so most will tell you what will fit without rubbing, what needs spacers, etc.

There are a variety of factors that come into play when choosing a rim. Having aftermarket suspension and larger width rims/tires should be considered.
But considering it's wifey's benz I would say suspension is stockish no? Also that rim has a 8" width which is stock size correct? Assuming that et means offset, you've only got a 2mm difference, which is hardly much.
Go for it.

it all depends on how much space you have in your wheel wells. if you have a ton of space in there you can get away with running wheels ~20mm offset difference without having any fit issues.

people are really concerned about it because they are trying to stick as much wheel/tire in their wheelwells as possible in order to make it look hella flush
