I broke off one of the pins to Pentium 4 2.53 GHz CPU. The CPU will not work, even after attempting some fixes recommended. So I bought a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz 800FBS assuming that it would be compatible with my motherboard because both have Socket 478. However, after spending some time learning about BIOS updates, I may have stumbled upon the fact that the new CPU I ordered (dont have it yet) will not be compatible with my MoBo.
I could not figure out what kind of MoBo I have since I could not turn my computer on, so I called Dell (I have a Dimension 2400) and they said I have a 845GV Brookdale. After a Google search on the MoBo I came across this Intel page, which, if I understand it correctly, means that my new CPU will not work with my MoBo. Or maybe it will work, just not at maximum speed, since the the 845GV chipset supports 533 FBS and not 800?

What is a "chipset" and what part does it play in the MoBo?
I would greatly appreciate any advice you have on my Mobo and CPU problems.
