Help me understand HDD Max Shock specs (in G's)

Here are WD's specs for some Green-series drives (WD20EARS) I have:

Shock (Gs)
Operating (2 ms, read)__________30
Operating (2 ms, read/write)_____65
Non-operating (1 ms)___________250

For one thing, I don't really see why there's a time parameter in there. Though that's probably owing to my quasi-total ignorance of physics. For another, I wonder if there's some way to get an idea of what 250G's (1ms) feels like?

So, if anyone with a grounding in physics cares to give me an idea about these matters, it would be warmly appreciated!
