Help me understand DVD R/RW etc

Having never owned a DVD burner, I am out of the loop when it comes to this tech.

Uses?

Differences in tech?

Good brands?

Uses? Back up a lot of data on one disc, back up movies and burn home movies....

Differences in tech? Not much, they all basically work the same just different speeds.

Good brands? Around here Pioneer, NEC, Plextor. But it really depends on choice and willingness to pay for quality/name, speed or dual-layer technology.
