My PC of about 3 years was playing AC unity beautifully. Then the game crashed and NVinpsector reset the GPU overclock. Started the game up again played for 5 minutes then the whole system shut down. Now it will not start. If I drain the capacitors by switching the PSU off and pressing the on button until the MB light turns off it will start the fans for about half a second and then shut off.

I ordered a new PSU - same problem. Then I removed the battery - same problem.

Removed GPU - same problem. Then with GPU removed reset CMOS. It starts!

If I put the GPU back in it repeats the fan on for half a second issue. I tried another GPU - same problem.

Could I have blown out the PCI-E slot?

I will pick up a new battery and test when I get home later. Please suggest other tests or possible concerns. If need be I can swing by MicroCenter.

My system:

Asus P8Z77-Deluxe
Intel 3570k O/C to 4.8GHz
New PSU is Corsair AX860
Cooling is Corsair H50
RAM is unknown G.Skill I suppose I can test with it removed.

Thanks for reading.

What GPU? Have you tried other PCI-E slots?

Sorry it's a MSI 780ti Gaming

I have not tried another slot. I will when I get home.

Also maybe I made a mistake and this should be in PC help. Mods if you feel so please kindly move this.

I tested a new Asrock MB Z77 extreme 4.

After some testing turns out it won't start with the 780ti. I had my old 780 around and it works if you reset the CMOS. Probably my old MB still works. It didn't work on the Asus because I didn't reset CMOS after switching the cards. I'll have to do some testing to check that.

Looks like I'll have to go with a 980gtx I guess.
