I'll be heading off to Iraq in a couple weeks and want to keep my 2 computer running while I'm gone. The wife will be taking them to her parents house, and will have to use a wireless connection for her computer.

I'm thinking maybe Internet connection sharing will do the trick to get the other computer online to report results, and minimize space needed to run 2 pc's. Does that work reliably? And does it have to share with another windows computer? Or is there a linux solution where I could run on a usb wireless card and run the pc headless? I doubt that she'll set up two monitors/keyboards/and mice. Perhaps a very cheap kvm would do the trick too.

What is already there, like what kind of connection do they have?

I'd just use a router, boot up the one computer, and forget about it.

Yes it depends on the connection you have.

I have 8 machines talking though a ninth that has the internet connetion - a dial up. It uses Win XP with ICS. If the other machines should reboot, they come on line again and all is well. Just need to make sure your internet connected machine is sorted.

Certainly details on the set up would help. A router sounds like the easiest answer, but only if the internet connection is a cable/dsl one. If the connection is dialup, then it does sound like ICS is the way to go. The router route is nearly foolproof, and though my setup is wired, not wireless, it has yet to fail me in over 2 years.

On a side note, take care over there and thank you for your service. I like your quote, which I'm assuming is a paraphrase of Edmund Burke's famous "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing" line. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers, and we'll keep a light on for you.

Well, my wife will be moving into her parents house while I'm gone. Her parents have cable with a wireless router, and her room will be upstairs. I cant have my computer near the router. I guess I could just buy 2 usb wireless adaptors if necessary. We already have one for the tivo thats going into her room.

That sounds like your best alternative. The USB route is probably the best for your situation, since the networking demands won't be that great. Best of luck!
