Help me start my new build... using my old HD

I'm just installed the components for my new build (you guys helps me pick it out -- thanks):

MOBO: ASUS P5K-E
CPU: Intel Q9450
RAM: G.Skills DDR2 1000 (2x 2Gb)
GPU: eVGA 7900GT
PSU: Seasonic S12
HD #1: WD160YS-01S SATA II
HD #2: WD320KS-00P SATA II
Case: Silverstone Temjin TJ07 case
OS: Vista Ultimate 64-bit

I updated the P5K-E BIOS to rev. 1013 using my USB flash card reader -- that was easy.

However, my HD #1 which contains the OS and program comes from my previous build with an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium with AMD X2 4800+.

I'm able to boot vista x64 but have two issues: 1) my USB keyboard and USB mouse are not operational (I know the USB port work because I upgrade the BIOS via a USB card reader) and 2) the system crashes almost instantly with the error: asio.sys.

I'm assuming that this error is due to the fact that I have drivers for the A8N-SLI I previously used and I need to install those for the P5K-E (correct me if I'm wrong).

QUESTION (related to my assumption above):

How do I go about installing the x64 drivers (should this be my issue) for the P5K-E without wiping my current install? Or better yet, if I don't need to install the drivers, I do I go about starting this new build up?

As usual, I'm happy to provide any and all information necessary.

Again, thanks in advance.

If you want to change the drivers without formatting, boot into safe mode, use add/remove programs to remove them all, then install new hardware and boot up and install them.

Roguestar,

Thanks for the quick reply. That was my initial intention, but when I boot in safe mode, my USB keyboard and mouse don't work. I know the USB port is ok because I use this particular port for the USB flash drive and it worked fine. Is there something I need to do in the BIOS to make the keyboard and mouse work?

Another temporary trick you could try: get one of those adapter plugs that converts the USB connector on the end of the keyboard cord to a PS2 connector, and plug it in that way. The OS likely will deal with a PS2 keyboard without needing USB drivers installed. That could get you going well enough (without the mouse) to use the Safe Mode to change all the drivers.

Good thing I'm already bald because I would be pulling all my hair out!

I'm able to use my USB keyboard when I'm navigating the BIOS. For a while, I was also able to use the keyboard and mouse if they were connected to the USB hub in my Dell 3007 monitor. However, if I re-booted and connected the keyboard in the same USB port, the keyboard would still work in BIOS but not in Vista (can't even login since the keyboard and mouse won't work). So, the system has been up for the last two days, with the keyboard and mouse connected to the display USB hub...

It finally froze and I cleared the BIOS to its original settings. I tried using the 64/60 keyboard emulator on/off as well as Plug n Play OS yes/no but I can't find the settings to make this work.

Can someone tell me how to get my keyboard to work? As a matter of fact, can someone be kind enough to tell me which settings in the BIOS I should change from the default with the build below:

MOBO: ASUS P5K-E
CPU: Intel Q9450
RAM: G.Skills DDR2 1000 (2x 2Gb)
GPU: eVGA 7900GT
PSU: Seasonic S12
HD #1: WD160YS-01S SATA II
HD #2: WD320KS-00P SATA II
Case: Silverstone Temjin TJ07 case
OS: Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Lastly, do I have to manually set the DDR2 speed in the Jumperfree settings? If so, do I set it at 1000 or 1066?

I'm standing by in the kitchen, ready to run downstairs to attempt to get this going before I have to call the suicide hotlline.
