Let's say Ive got $1000 to throw at upgrades. I was sort of saving for BD, but who knows when it will be here and what it will bring. Ive thought about just upgrading my CPU to a 2500k but of course that means a new mobo as well, and at that point I might as well build fresh, right?

Per my sig rig,I have RAM, a power supply, a good cooler, windows 7 ultimate retail, 2 1tb hard drives, and 2 nice cases. Plus a 5850 I am thinking about picking up another one to xfire. Or maybe a new card, I dont really know. I waver like grass in the wind (as evidenced by some of my previous threads)

I'm only on a 20.5 inch, 1600x900 monitor right now so a monitor upgrade should be on my list. What I want to do is take my current rig plus the money and build something to last me as long as possible and also add a few nice touches like a Logitech G510 (I have a G9x mouse, I am a sucker for custom lighting)

I dont encode or anything, the rig's main use is gaming. I dont need a sound card, Im fine with onboard realtek (I actually prefer it to Soundblaster products Ive used), and I have no need for SSDs (tried em, theyre nice but Im used to load times, that doesnt bug me).

So Im in a rather odd position, I have a decent rig but for a really significant upgrade Id almost have to replace everything. I really cant go over a grand on this one (though if I sold the GPU, CPU, and motherboard I could add the money from those to the $1000).

Im curious to see what you guys would do with it if it was burning a hole in your pocket.

That is a Great CPU!
Don't waste your money on a new system/platform just for gaming, just buy a GPU.
Just overclock your CPU a little more. I was a 3.49Ghz for a while at 1.3v then I did a bios updated and thought, why not overclock a little higher. Now I'm at 3.81Ghz at 1.23v - who would of thought! This will last me a long time as Nehalem is a very strong CPU. Probably 2 more GPU iterations/generations .

New monitor maybe a 24 inch that does 1920x1080 ?
A ssd if you don't own one already
gtx580

Comes well under $1,000 and will benefit you more i think then a new platform. :)

But it's your money.

what's up with the technical details?

Technical Details

Interactive map gradually reveals new areas as you advance in the game
Based on historical research
Rediscover monuments like the Lighthouse, the Library, and the city of Alexandria
Challenging puzzles each referencing Egyptian culture and science
15+ hours of gameplay

those don't seem like monitor specs

Mainly for gaming, then?

I tried dual GPU for the first time with 5870s.
I am now back to one single GPU for my gaming rig

I would go with a larger 120Hz PC monitor and a GTX 580 or 570. If you double tap the WASD keys for dodging alot then I would recommend a mechanical keyboard that uses Cherry MX 'Black' switches. And lastly a mouse with a 1000Hz polling rate.

While I agree with most of the above comments and suggest you get a GPU, stick with or further overclock the CPU, and invest in a good monitor; I doubt the "well just get a gtx580 thats under ur budget" is a great idea.

If it were me, I would look at either a 460-1G SLI ($120 after rebate x2=~$250), 560 Ti ($200-250) or a 6950/6970 ($220-350), as well as a nice 22-26 inch 1920x1200 / 1920x1080 monitor. Just stear clear of the 22'' 1920x1080 "2ms GtG" TN pannels... they are crap and look like crap.

Oh and as an owner of the G510, *awesome* keyboard... love it. I also have & love my G10!

I agree with the others that an i5 750 @ 3.5 is good CPU and there is no point in upgrading it right now. The 5850 is basically a low-midrange GPU at this point, so I don't think that it is worth doing CFX.

Here's what I would get:
Acer 23.6" 120Hz monitor $350
GTX 570 $290 AR
Corsair Force 120GB $205
Total: $845

That should leave you plenty of money to get whatever mouse/kb you want.
