Or do i want to get a 17" KDS and pay 700$? I know i dont want a 15" thats for sure. But will i see a bid difference between a 18.1 and a 17" ?

thanks,
SHawn

You probably won't notice the difference but since you are getting an LCD why don't buy the best you can buy.

BTW The 17" have more PPI which usually means sharper image and text.
I prefer sharper image and text than screen size though.

I think the SGI 17" is much better though.
It has 1600x1024 resolution.

The 18" only has 1280x1024 max.

SGI 17 have a multilink port that you buy so you can use dvi or analog capable video card on it.

You can read a very good review about SGI 17" at GamePC
I think it beat NEC in performance and image quality.

The good think about this SGI is the 20ms pixel response times.

kewl I guess it needs that card to get that 1600x1024. also to recive the digital signal

thanks andalas im trying to see if i can afford to get this SCI 17" :)

do you think the picture will sufer if i use a older Voodoo 3500? I know the voodoos had Really good 2D quality over most cards anyways

EDIT: dam the voodoo is not supported :( i dont know if i should be stuck with a digtal video card YET. Dam im really confused now.

My suggestion if you can, buy a Digital card
Don't use analog card to drive your LCD.

I have G450 and Eizo L771 19.6" LCD and it only have 2 analog with no digital input
and the picture quality is unstable at first since it keeps missing clock timing between the card and the LCD. I got it lock now, but still have a few vertical lines (only if I use a software to adjust phase timing)

Digital connection will send clock timing data to the LCD so that it can match timing. With analog the LCD has to guess at what clock timing the video card is operating so if it is very hard to have a perfect clock timing match.

I have two SGI 1600SW LCD's and just bought a Sony SDM-M81 18" LCD for my girlfriend for her birthday. I'd recommend the SGI hands down. Of course you'd need a compatible vid card though (the Sony is obviously more flexible in that department). I've used the SGI with a Matrox G400 Max, ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon (which I'm currently using), 3dlabs Oxygen VX1-1600SW and a GeForce2 Ultra. So at least now you know of some cards that work with it :)

Like I said, you can use a GeForce2 Ultra 64MB or the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 32MB..and maybe the GeForce3 (you might want to ask around and see if anyone's gotten this config to work).

Personally I use the ATI card and though I don't play games often, I did play Deus Ex at 1600x1024 full screen res (the game supports it natively) all the way through a couple months back. It was smooth as silk and the graphics were beautiful. If you're a light gamer like me, the Radeon or GeForce cards will be more than enough. A lot of cards are supporting the SuperWide res of the SGI 1600SW now so finding a high quality card capable of powering resource-hungry 3D games shouldn't be that big a deal (not like a year or two ago, when the G400 Max was the only decent compatible card!). If you do a lot of professional work or even just web browsing, you'll LOVE the 1600x1024 res since it allows you to have two browser windows open side by side at the same time.

Since I currently have two SGI 1600SW units, I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon. I considered getting two of the new Sony 18" LCDs ($1600 each) and running them in a dual setup but I decided the larger res of the SGI flatpanels was just too much of a convenience to give up. Now if only the 22" Apple Cinema display were PC compatible..
