Help me spend 2k Tech Allowance.

My law firm, is giving me a $2000 allowance to buy anything tech related for my home. I want a really good IBM X series computer for a really good price. The cheaper, the better, because I'd like to buy either a great PDA or Flat Screen to use with the docked thinkpad.

What do you suggest as the best places to get these things? Any friends and family deals, or is that not allowed any more on these forums? Also what kind of PDA should I get? Remember, it doesn't need to be super duper fancy, in fact, I don't need all the bells, and whistles, but I would like a good one that has all the useful functions and looks nice, and has a crisp screen.

So what do you think? I hope you all have some good advice for me, and when all is finished, I'll post pics of the stuff!

wow.....

all the more motivation for me to go to law school after I get my BS compsci.... bling bling sarbanes oxley/HIPPA lawer time 😀rool;

Send it to RossMAN and have him buy tech stuff for you. You'll get 2x the stuff as if you did it yourself.

get a 400SC from dell $450 and spend $690 on a 20 " LCD

you might want to upgrade the ram / vid card (integrated but has AGP slot)

I'm convinced that Dell is not the way to go - having been in law school, I've seen a LARGE quantity of them, and they are constantly breaking down. Tech support blows, I've heard, as well. So I'm pretty set on buying an X series, since that's the smallest of IBM's line. Are there other laptop makers with (Toshiba, etc) with the same quality as IBM?

What PDA is the best balance of features and price?

I just started this past monday. Dude, I get a $750 allowance for a gym membership too. Full perks on my banking account, and all sorts of stuff. I'm going to work like a dog, but at least I get paid well for it.

Go to law school and work HARD!

Stop, putting commas, all over, the freaking, place where, they don't belong.

What kind, of idiot, would hire a lawyer, who cannot, punctuate, coherently, and may, write in, a defendant, itinerary, i helped my dad jack off a horse, instead of i helped my dad Jack off a horse, because, he lacks, 3rd, grade, punctuation, skills.

Thanks for the recommendation

DigDug,

IBM and Apple without a doubt make the best consumer level notebooks. I'm not to crazy about ultraportablesuperslim 3 pound laptops because the keyboard and screens are CRAMPED. I'd rather get a high end business notebook (under or around 5 pounds) which has a 14.1 display, comfortable keyboard and most importantly a combo DVD/CD-RW optical drive.

So here's what I would buy (after you find a Hot Deal of course)
IBM ThinkPad T42
Dell Axim X30

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Ross

Dude, don't, ..., PC-monkey, ...?

Now give me half of your $2000 allowance or else I will quote the entire response. j/k

Oh, I don't give a damn in the least about those two - much less "fear" them. I just removed it because I realized that to post that would simply be stooping down to their level.

Good, bad or otherwise, your budget won't go far buying IBM products. And they don't discount much AT ALL.

Laptop: $1600
Docking station: $200
Power adaper for docking station: $90

That's basically your budget gone. No room for LCD, and barely enough room for a low end PDA.

umm... just go to newegg and build a comp, you will save lots of money. or you could get a 23"apple lcd with student dicsount and upgrade ur current computer

Do not mind the lower-rung representation in some of the above responses, DigDug. Some feel intellectually challenged when presented with phrases, dependent clauses, gerunds, or polysyllabic verbs - most especially when they exist in the same sentence and are separated by (gasp!) proper punctuation.

Good luck with your purchase. A notebook and a large flat panel make a very nice combination; although, not certain your budget could withstand such.

why not get the deoll 700m? the part that i don't like with the X-series is that it is so hardcore it doesn't even have any sort of cd-rom
