Help me spec out a rig for my little brother, will ya?

shilala

Lifer
My little brother is 29. 🙂
This will be his first decent rig and he's got $1000 to spend.
I'd like to keep the component cost as low as humanly possible to try and squeeze a decent monitor out of his budget.

I need everything from case to psu to dvd burner.
It's main use will be as a gamer.

kk though, AMD prolly, CRT or LCD monitor? Rice Case or no rice case?
amd, lcd (hopeful), no rice, antec psu.

so you figure about $750 for the tower.

I'd say something like:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 939 $139
Corsair Value Select 1GB kit $76.25
Epox 9NPA+ Ultra $105.00
Connect3D X800GTO $175.00
WD 250GB SATA HDD $110.00
AntecTX640B Case w/400 watt PSU $98.99
NEC DVD+/-RW Burner $38.99
Total: 743.25.

Then find a decent LCD or CRT and a KB/Mouse solution and you're set.

lol, when I read little brother I first thought of a teenager.

anyways, I like my rig quite a bit, and would imagine you could put the same one together for fairly cheap as it is a year old.

AMD3200+ Winchester 939 $164
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D $132
1GB Corsair ValueSelect $76.25
BFG GeForce 6600GT OC PCI-e 128MB $194
Seagate SATA 120.0 GB $85
Zalman 7000-CU LED $38.99
Antec NeoHE 430 $85.75
Antec P160-WF $99.99
NEC Silver IDE DVD Burner $38.99

That's ~$915 w/o shipping, and you could probably find a nice used monitor on FS/T for ~$100. The case seems expensive, but I always said I would never spend that much on a case, and now that I did, I won't ever buy a cheap case again. It is so nice and quiet, and runs cool to boot.

why would you spend almost $200 on a 6600GT? The GTO I linked is a hellvua lot faster (esp. OC'd) than that card and its $15 cheaper... 😕

he wanted suggestions. I am happy with my rig, so I listed the closest thing to what I have. I'm not pricegrabber...

Replace that evil hand eating (see my thread) 1650B with a 2650B, and the A8N-VM with an A8N-E and you have a perfect rig right there
Don't forget Windows 😉

True...but I think 6800GS costs around the same, and is quite a bit faster too (faster than the GTO stock, OC'd the GTO will beat it if it has all 16 pipelines)
