So apparently this KakaoTalk app for android is quite huge. I finally tried it and it found my long lost friend whom I haven't been in touch whatsoever in last 12 years.

I'm puzzled as hell as to how the app found him. Check this:

-We were friends back in HS and lost touch completely when he moved to CA

-Zero contact. I don't know his # or email.

-Again, not a single email was exchanged. Just to make sure, I searched his name on my Gmail history, nothing pops up.

-He doesn't even have FB.

-My friendship with him was outside of my usual social circle as he went to different HS (his and my mom were friends). What I mean is that, we have ZERO mutual friends (which lots of social networks base that off of).

The app KakaoTalk just found him automatically and suggested him to add as friend. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised to find him!!! I never even searched him on this app or FB.

How did they do it?

I'm confused by this part of the sentence.

What's so hard about it?

My friend and I know nobody else outside of just us. Our parents don't count since neither of them use any social network.

You don't think there's any "you --> your mom --> his mom --> him" line anywhere? Like email?

Both of them are first-gen Asian immigrants and don't use social network in any way. His mom and my mom probably don't even email, just phone.

I would just assume that there is some chain of connection through friends of friends. I know you think it's unlikely but if you grew up in the same geographical area I wouldn't be surprised. I've seen some crazy connections on Facebook, friends of friends of friends that knew eachother and I would never have guessed it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KakaoTalk

KakaoTalk automatically synchronizes with user’s contact list and find friends who are on the service. Users can also search friends by KakaoTalk ID without having to know each other's phone number.

Perhaps your searching in GMail (Google), linked to the app to search your friend you was also using KakaoTalk. :hmm:
