I want to set up a linux box to act as a server for a group of win 98 pcs and then set up a lan. I just bought a dlink kit for the lan and I'm sure I can buy some linux sw fromn linux mall but how do I actually set up the server box? Is it just as simple as installing linux on an extra old box?

I'm not a Linux guru, but I know you just setup the linux box like any other. Once it's ready and on the network, download and install Samba - It emulates an NT server on Linux for file sharing and printing.

And gawd, don't buy Linux. Download it from RedHat. If you've got a burner you can download a CD image and get exactly what you would if you paid for it. Actually, it would be better, as it's up to date. Granted, its a 600mb download, but it's worth it.

Probably a better question for the OS forum than this one but...what do you mean by server here? Like just a simple file server?
