Help me set up a switch behind my Netopia router

My cable modem goes to the router, the router has an uplink port. i connect my switch to that. the switch can't see the router. it can see the 2 computers i have hooked to it but not the router. what am i doing wrong here?
 
use a regular port on the router, and the uplink port on the switch. You are "uplinking" to the next higher device in your network.
