Help me screw...

Now that I have your attention. 😉

How are screws described?

I have some security hex machine screws coming from Parts Express, & I realized they may not be long enough. I got the longest they had, so I need to try to find some locally.

The parts I have ordered are:

#10-32 x 1-1/2" BLACK MACHINE SCREW

The part I'm confused on is the #10-32:

Does that mean gauge and TPI? As in 10 gauge, 32 threads per inch? 10 gauge doesn't seem that thick, it's what I have in my ears...

I need to buy screws that match the #10-32 T-nuts I also have coming, any help would be appreciated.

You are correct in your assumption that 10 is the gauge and 32 is the amount of threads per inch.

Are there any other factors to consider, or is #10-32 sufficient to guarantee they'll work?

Depends on how much you want to screw. And it depends on how deeply you want to screw. Do you want a tight fight or is loose ok?

And, don't bury the head too deeply or you'll crack the hole.

Same diameter, same gauge, same tpi, should fit.

Keep in mind, however, that different manufacturers may have different tolerances that are incompatible. But normally you should be ok.

10 is the wire gauge they use before rolling the threads on it (Most threads are rolled onto the bare shaft instead of cutting them), threads per inch is self explanatory, the other factor you have to consider is material hardness.

Grade 0 soft steel, found at most hardware stores
Grade 1 Little harder, also found at most hardware stores
Grade 2 Little harder, also found at most hardware stores
Grade 4 Much harder, can be found at some hardware stores
Grade 5 through 8, these are specialty bolts and nuts, they are used for critical systems like brake hardware, seatbelt anchors etc.

What are you going to use the hardware for ?

If you have a #10-32 bolt, a #10-32 nut will fit correctly.

I'll be pre-drilling the holes & screwing into t-nuts.

Roger

These will be used to mount a 15" subwoofer driver into the bottom of a cabinet.

Other considerations:
length
head style
head size
if a part of the shaft isn't threaded

10-32 only describes the threads, not the entire bolt.

Edit:
It also doesn't describe the material, and strength of material.
ie: grade 8 fasteners used in engines.

Damn, boy...innuendo is just lost on you, eh? 😛

Those appear to be wood blind nuts for woodworking, any #10-32 bolt will work just fine.

Excellent, thank you very much. 🙂

I'll post pictures of this when I'm all done, it's a 214L Adire Tempest (Adire Aligned), dual 3" ports, & powered with an 860W amp.

Should quite literally rock.

LOL

That's got to be the funniest thing I've seen this week.
