My roommate and his fiance stay at our house every once and a while during the week. While he is away, I have our house all to ourselves. My idea is this:

He has a T.V. and a DVD player right next to his bed and I wanted to rig the T.V. and DVD player to turn on in the middle of the night (say 2am-sh) and play a video of that girl from the ring coming out of the T.V. or a video of something fairly scary that's believable like something is filming them. I don't think I could rig the audio control but it would have to be somewhat loud and have scary ambient noise. The problem is I'm not sure how to do this. I don't think the DVD player has an timer-on function. Also, I don't know how to get the DVD to play after they are both on. Any body have any recommendations? I want them (him and his fiance) to be relatively scared of going in his room. What do you guys think and how do you think I could set this up?

Yeah easiest way would be to just quickly switch the video source to that of a cable (or wireless device maybe?) that way you don't have to worry about having them use the dvd player before bed, mucking up your plan. (Ex: if you put a dvd in there and they remove it/see it). Your scary video would need to have maybe 5 minutes of silence and black. So it gives you type to sneak in, turn on the TV while it's black and silent and sneak out. At worse they may semi wake up with that feeling someone came in the room then realize no one is around, then 5 minutes later...

Another idea is invite them to watch that movie with you, ensure you properly time when it starts. Have a friend call the house at a specific time so it falls when movie is done and say "SEVEN DAYS" and hang up. You need to arrange it so she picks it up. (maybe head straight to the washroom after the movie).

I heard of someone doing this to his GF, most hilarious thing ever.

It would be much easier to just do it with a computer. And find something better than the ring, maybe goatse ***** etc.

Ahh I see. I think I could find a way to add another video source or modify the existing source. Thanks for the help so far! Now to find a video.

Why can't you just steal the remotes and turn them on from a distance after they are asleep?

Because they close the door and he has a dog. (Dog is relatively quiet, but will figit if I try to sneak in there.) However that gives me another idea for a universal remote to turn on the player/TV. Thanks for that :)

I meant steal the remotes before they go to bed. He will just think he misplaced it and go to sleep with it temporarily lost.

You could plug the TV into a timer so it automatically turns on at a certain point. You could also have a small light hooked up to the same timer and running into your room so you know exactly when it turns on.

Except... wait, most TVs have soft power-on switches, so you can't make a TV automatically turn on as soon as it gets power, right? Or is it possible?

Anyway, just throwing the idea of a timer out there.

As for a video, what might work well is one of those "screamer" flash videos where you have calm, quiet music playing for a minute or so and then something loud and scary comes on the screen. The first part wakes him up and confuses him, and just as he's getting his bearings he gets a good shock.

Your roommate that gullible, he scare easily? If my tv turned on @ 2am in the morning and playing the scene from the ring as we near Halloween, I would tell you to come out of hiding and try harder next year.

go and buy a pregnancy test. Throw the tester away and when he girlfriend is gone, go into his room with the empty box and say "dude, look what I just found in the trash in the bathroom!"

LOL! Ok, that's one better but it requires more effort :)
