Help me resolve a conflict

I am connected to my home LAN through an ethernet adapter(DHCP) and right now tried to send a fax from my pc('98SE) using symantec fax software, through the data/fax modem. Now it seems there is a conflict in my computer about which way to access to net(my guess), because it is giving me frequent "Server conncetion was reset", a blank screen, Error 404 etc whenever I am trying to access internet along with frequent system freeze. Is there a way to hardcode the information.
