Help me replace a MacBook Pro

I recently (this summer) purchased a new MacBook Pro. It's an ok machine, but after looking at other machines out there I can't help but feel ripped off. Plus, I'm spending most of my time in Windows 7 anyway via Boot Camp. So, I would like to replace it (I figure I can get some decent cash for the $2200 I spent -- it's barely used).

The problem, I've noticed, is that I can't seem to find a notebook with all 3 of the below characteristics. I can find notebooks with 1 or 2 of them but I need all 3 because I use the machine both for work and some gaming.

  • Decent graphics card. This has a 9600M GT which gets 1703 on 3DMark Vantage and 5603 on 3DMark06 (see http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html). I would like a laptop with a card as good or better than this.
  • Good battery life. Apple rates it at 7 hours but I don't get anywhere near it. Closer to 5. Still, every notebook I've seen out there with a decent video card seems to be in the sub 2-hour area. At least 3 would be good; 4+ would be preferable.
  • Relatively lightweight. This thing is 6.5 lbs. I can probably go up to 8. I'm not interested in a 10+ lbs monster (I need to go on trips with this thing).

Any recommendations?

5 hours in Boot Camp, yes. Something to do with the battery I think (which is unremovable, at least according to Apple - *sigh*).

The most difficult parts are matching the overall build quality of a Macbook (especially Pro) , and getting a decent graphics card with good battery life.

Personally, I'd look into a Dell Studio / XPS

I've looked into this too, and you basically have to choose whether the Mac's nice build quality and great battery life is more important to you than cheaper price/more power/crappy battery.

Coworker sent me this link and I just made an impulse buy. It's not lightweight (8.5 lbs) and I doubt the battery life is going to be amazing... but I'd be damned if I find this kind of hardware at a better price.

Intel Core i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB)
4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M
18.4" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Espresso Black)
Intel Wireless-N Mini-card
8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

...$1000 with coupon.

18.4", wow! Nice desktop replacement, won't be fun to carry around though.

Have you looked at the HP Elitebook? They have 14, 15, 17" ones and I think they are relatively lightweight. Also probably more durable than any Apple.

That HP has a lot of hardware for the price but it is a monster. Personally an XPS Studio 16 would be my pick.
