bst model atx 250 12z d
Bestec model atx 250 12z d

Thats whats on the power supply label. I google it and am finding prices all over the place. I am also getting the idea Bestec is of low quality. This is for an old Compaq 6000z. AMD 2200 I was using it as a PVR. I think i over loaded the power supply with two extra video cards and a extra hardrive and a cd burner

It would reboot itself, it would shut itself down. Now nothing happens when I try to power it on. No beeps, no desktop, no fan

Help
I know its a gamble to throw money at an old PC

Newegg????

Bestec isn't that bad you think it is.
If it were, they wouldn't be sold in Compaq units!
The big manufacturers all use pretty decent to good PSUs to save money.
That may sound ridicioulus but a crappy PSU can easily toast the whole rig and therefore increase the cost in the RMA department, so they do not use unreliable PSUs.

How old is the PSU we are talking about?

Funny, i have a Bestec250 watt right here from my uncle's HP PC that died on him. I am not sure what is wrong with it but since it is a Pentium 4 I will recycle the whole thing at my work.

You should be able to get a better PSU on newegg, try Corsair, Enermax or read reviews. I would suggest Antec but they are hit or miss. I had Antec 5 years ago and under the 3 year warranty I replaced it twice. I hear the earthwatt series are good.

Newegg is good because with the pictures you should be able to see if you have the correct connectors but i believe there is a lot of backwards compatibility.

You also search fatwallet or slickdeals for any PSU's for cheap.

Well, in that case, you have a little problem.
There are no decent units on the marke that can power an old K7 system that uses the +5V rail most, they are all designed for a high +12V load and just a little on the +5V Rails, about 120-150W +3,3V/+5V combined Power is common these days.

I'd stick with the bestec and replace the whole system such as an Athlon 2/x2 230 or whatever with an AM3 785G Board and DDR-3 SDRAM.
