Help me remember what this PC game was

There was a PC game I played that was pretty similar in concept to the DreamCast's "Armada". I picked it up in probably 2001, maybe 2002. Ship upgrades, levels up and all that fun. There was also a a concept of a research center where you pick what upgrades will become available next. I want to say the title was 2 words (not 100% on that though), but I cant recall what it is. Gameplay was all like armada, top down 2d with some 3d elements.

FYI, I know the armada online alpha is open, just looking for something to keep me busy on the train though.

Someone has suggested the game "Astrogeddon". While it seems pretty similar, not quite what I was after.

Thanks😕

Played it.
Good fun.

I really think we have been lacking in good space games lately.
Not enough fighter sims, not enough space conquest sims (Master Of Orion and such), not enough RTS's of any type.
I wish MOO3 had been better and Lucas Arts would make another Tie Fighter or X-Wing.

Would also like an official add-on for Homeworld 2.
