here are some tips. smoking is as much of a habit as it is a chemical addiction to nicotine. therefore to be successful you should really address both aspects of your smoking problem.
first of all, go see a doctor. he or she can prescribe various nicotine replacement products, and advise you on how to properly use them. you may also add an atypical antidepressant such as zyban or wellbutrin, which have been shown to increase the chance that you will successfully quit.
second, you need to kill your habit. remove cigarettes from where you live, work, drive, or elsewhere. avoid places where you smoke. for example if you take a lunch break to smoke, go somewhere else instead. don't just hang out in the same area and watch others smoke in front of you. do things to keep your hands and mouth busy. chew gum, type on anandtech, etc. you must break the habit of smoking as much as the physical dependence.
third, ask your doctor about the risks of smoking and the benefits of quitting. studies have shown that smoking greatly increases your risk of not only lung cancer, but also heart attacks, strokes, peripheral vascular disease, and worsens virtually every other medical condition known to man (with a few peculiar exceptions). but the good news it that studies have also shown that no matter when you quit, it is never too late to see the benefits of quitting. those with COPD see the progression of their disease slow. you immediately lower your risk of heart attacks and strokes. the health benefits are real and show improvement as soon as you quit.
fourth, cigarettes have many bad social outcomes. not only are you sicker, but it costs money, it smells bad, and it pisses a lot of people off. i'm sure you know all this, and that's why you want to quit. good job.
fifth, after getting these things in place, especially the nicotine, SET A QUIT DATE. that's a date after which you will not smoke. not a single cigarette. that's your extra motivation.
finally, if you cheat, start over. if you smoke one, then stop and start over. many people require several attempts to quit successfully, so don't give up. keep at it.
cliffs: go see your doctor, get help, and remember that smoking is as much of a habit as chemical dependence.
good luck. smoking is a terrible habit.
