Help me put together an A64+ System!

This summer I'm looking foward to saving up my money from my job and buying a brand new A64+ CPU, motherboard and RAM. I would like to keep the upgrade under $500 and I'm want the BEST motherboard and CPU I can get. Right now my games are limited by my Abit AT7-MAX 2 w/ Barton 2500+. I really want 1GB of RAM.

The problem is that prices and parts and availability change to quick, you need to post when you have the cash.

Everyone wants the best, no need to state it. 🙂

I guess price performance is the AMD 64 3000+. As for motherboard, they all have reported issues and there is no one true standout. Both the ASUS and MSI offerings are solid, it seems.

Ditto what Axon said on the 3000+. For the motherboard, I'd strongly consider the ASRock K8S8X. It's $85 at Newegg and it rocks. The thing is just dead stable, performs well, and I haven't heard of any issues of any kind with it. Other's here, notably Bar81 also highly recommend the board. Also in this price category is the Chaintech VNF-250, but this board hasn't been around long enough yet to know if all the kinks are worked out.
