Ive been going through many threads in this section trying to figure out how to setup my home server so some of you may be familiar with me. Ive got a Pentium D box in my basement that I am using as a file/media server. I have been toying around with different ideas on how to properly setup this server but never got around to actually implementing them. A few weeks ago I had a hard drive die on me and I lost everything so now I need to start making some decisions.
Here is how the system is currently setup;
Intel DQ965GF
Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz
Windows Server 2008 Standard
Seagate 80gb OS drive
Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB for file storage
Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB for file storage
The OS drive is old and will be replaced by a newer more reliable drive. Then Im going to buy just a couple RE3 drives to start with and run them along side the Samsung. The Seagate will be taken out, its still new but Ive already lost one 7200.11, dont really want to use another.
I would like to go RAID but Im trying not to spend much money past the hard drives so a decent RAID controller is out of the question.
I know linux software RAID is suppose to be amazing but I would like to find a solution I can use IN Server 2008. If there really isnt anything good then Ill consider switching over to linux.
Ive looked at unRAID and like it, except I use the server for things other than just file storage. There are certain programs I run and I need to be able to either RDP or VNC in, so unRAID is out.
What I really want it something like unRAID that can run IN Server 2008 rather than as its own OS. I remember finding some other kind of disk management software similar to unRAID that I think ran in windows but I cant remember what it was called or where I found it.
Anyone have any ideas for me? I know people are going to say that I should rely on stuff like these for backup purposes. I guess Ill rig up some kind of auto backup to an external drive or something.
