I know this sounds stupid, as everyone KNOWS this is true, but I have a freind and she says that oatmeal ISNT that good for you. I KNOW instant oatmeal isnt that good, but reglar old oats are the best! I need articles and such that I can forward to her to show her the error of her ways.

Its just ridiculous that I even need to do this, but I really havent found too many articles that spell out WHY it is so good for you.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Read the forums at BodyBuilding.com... They all say that you need to eat oats. A lot of them blend raw Oats into their protein shake (something I will never try :D)

Just start claiming when anything good happens to you it was because you eat oatmeal.

Just google: Why is oatmeal good for you?

I was hoping for something more subjective. A link from Quaker Oats will be looked at with a blind eye.
Google dammit. Use it.

I did dammit and I dont see anything there that explains WHY IT IS GOOD FOR YOU. I see lots of articles that say'everyone knows oatmeal is good for you...blah blah blah. Mostly just recipes and ads.

Okay I found ONE article that kind of explains why its healthful to eat. I will just keep looking

Because Wilford Brimley says so, and you don't F with Wilford Brimley!
That's also why I check my blood sugar daily! It doesn't even matter that I'm not diabetic, WILFORD FREAKING BRIMLEY SAID TO DO IT, SO YOU FREAKING DO IT!

There are dozens of studies out similar to this one. Their conclusions? People who (a) skip breakfast or (b) eat a low-sugar breakfast such as oatmeal eat A LOT less at lunch than someone who eats a sugary breakfast (ie most cereals or fruits). So if you eat oatmeal for breakfast, you'll eat a lot less throughout the day and thus lose weight. Or you can just point to cholesterol lowering studies like this one from Cheerio's showing that eating oats lowers your cholesterol (sorry I didn't bother to search for a non-biased site).

And while I'm here, instant oatmeal is the EXACT same ingredients as regular oatmeal. The only difference is that instant oatmeal is ground thinner and smaller so that the oats absorb water faster and transfer heat faster. In dietary terms, they are the same.

I went to the doctor last week and he said I need more fiber in my deit and to eat a bowl for breakfast every day.

So yes it is good for you, that is if you don't get the kind that is full of sugar.

Oatmeal has a high glycemic index and raises blood sugar very fast IIRC.

Instant oatmeal usually has a lot of sugar in it.

Irish oatmeal which is steel cut preserves alot more of the fibrous husk and therefor mitigates the blood sugar raising properties of rolled oats. It's harder to digest.

It is unusual for people to eat whole grains in the american diet therefore the more the better.

Is it better than some fruit and raw nuts? probably not. Is it better than Biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon and some chocolate milk? Certainly.

Its good for you b/c you are eating watery gruel instead of 3 eggs and a 1/2 pound of bacon on top of buttermilk biscuits and a side of gravy.

It raises your HDL which in turn lowers your LDL. It is also high in fiber to keep the plumbing moving.
