2 days back, i formatted my HDD and installed winme on a fresh disk...also i loaded mobo drivers from my K7S5a CD and all gfx card and sound drivers....everything went well....and the pc boots jus fine....but after i login to windows....it's hanging at the word go...all windows apps..except games(!).....there are no IRQ conflicts....no problems with DX....oh ya, the sound card's making funny noises...jus a sec before the login screen shows(during bootup)....the pc emits a long low screech...whatever....my sound card is SB Live! Value.....i have LiveWare 3.0 installed..

previously, around 2 months back, when i first got the k7s5a and the TBird 1.4G, i plugged in my old HDD with my old OS on it....booted the system and it just RAn...!!!!...no problems, no driver installs, no BIOS tweaks,....nOthing!....and now THIS????

hey before i forget, the BIOS has shown me 3 CMOS CHECKSUM errors in the last 3 days....

what do i do with all these problems???

That is a new one for me. Why win me?

Anyways be sure to install the chipset drivers for you OS install. Also try a bios update.

Replace the CMOS battery. Set the bios and then try again. If the system is still hanging, try running the system at 100/100 FSB just for troubleshooting. Does the system works? If not then the problem is probably software related. If the problem goes away at 100/100 FSB then it could be a PSU problem. Remember PSU's degrades overtime. Depending on the quality of the psu it could degrade as early as the next boot after installation or over a year. If you suspect PSU, try removing all the PCI cards and disconnecting some of the peripherals just for troubleshooting. Ran the system at minimum configuration and try again at 133/133FSB. If the system works perfect, try adding the peripherals one at a time while testing along the way. This can yield to two conclusions if the problem goes back while you're adding and testing. It could be a PSU being degraded or a conflict with drivers installed for the last device added. You could also try replacing the thermal tape on the chipset heatsink which tends to serve as a heat insulator rather than heat conductor. Use Arctic Silver paste instead. Or you can also raise the Vcore by closing al L7 bridges of the CPU with pencil.

Ooh that's a lot of work man. First before you go through all that try the most likely and obvious thing...boot in safe mose and install the latest SB Live driver off their website and the latest 4in1's (if you have a VIA mobo). I always have problems like that with installs and a diver update or two almost always fixes the problem. If you're getting that sound before the lock-up its most likely a sound card-driver related problem.

Thanx a lot guys!!
But.........I installed WinXP Pro just now...and WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Complete blooody stability is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!....
still if any known issues r there wit the K7S5A wit XP..pleeeeeeze tell me...

Thanx again...

PS:---------XP ROCX!!!!!!!!!!!!😀........I never thought i'd say this but......WAY TO GO MICROSOFT!!!!!!!!

wait just a minute you just installed XP dont judge yet you'll see that your going to find some trouble shooting there also! I admit the installation is very easy but driver support for sanners printers etc... are still lacked all in all I like XP but there are problems, I kinda feel as if its still being beta tested !!
