Help me please! Strange lockup problems

I've been having some recurring trouble with my PC. It will randomly hang and I have to shut it off and power it back on. I couldn't see any rhyme or reason to it until tonight I realized something that seems to trigger it - touching the case! Doesn't happen every time.

Now the PSU has been replaced, the old Antec PSU I had died. Apparently though the PSU isn't the cause of the hangups since I replaced it with the Corsair unit and it still does it. It isn't the wiring in the building either, because it has done this at 2 other houses as well. Can't be the UPS, it has done it when only on a surge protector. Also, it has apparently frozen up without me touching it before, because I've come back to the room from class or work and found that it had rebooted at some point. But I'm guessing it must all be linked somehow....

Does ANYONE have any idea why my system could be doing this to me? Kind of a pain not being able to touch the case since I have a door on the front. HELP ME PLEASE!! This is driving me nuts.

Touching it is strange, sounds like it could be a heat issue, though if you actually have to apply some force (ie a tap wont do it but a push or something will) then it could be that you have a short which you connect when you touch the case (though that should cause more then a lockup).

Wild guesses.
Is the polarity correct at the wall plug (hot & common)?
Is the case properly grounded? Is the wall plug properly grounded?

Did this start happening after you took the bad mouth of Antec out of your sig.?
If so, put it back in. 😛

Case has been changed already, no difference.
It just takes a touch, nothing jarring at all to do it. But like right now touching it isn't making it do it now, but it did it 4 times in a row a little earlier this evening.
The outlet is fine, and that really can't be it anyway as it has done it here in my dorm room, done it at home, done it at 2 other friends' houses....
And no, it didn't just start after removing the bad-mouthing antec part out of my sig 😉 this random freezing has been happening for a long time now, its finally gotten on my nerves enough that I want to find a solution for it.

I think it started not long after I replaced my 3700+ with my opteron. My mobo seems to have a not-so-stable vcore according to CPUz, PC Probe, and everest (it will fluctuate as much as 0.07V sometimes). Could touching the case be causing the vcore to drop somehow? It has locked up without me around before so it isn't caused just by touching it (and apparently not always caused by it as well since it won't lock up when I touch it right now).

Maybe I'll put up with it for a little longer, then sell all this stuff off when Barcelona comes out and build a new PC 😛

I did run outside the case for about a week while I was waiting on my new case to arrive. I don't recall it locking up on me then. It has done it in both cases.

Interesting, touching it won't make it freeze now 😕

Since you had the issue in 2 different cases, but did not have it when running the board out of the case, sounds like the mobo could be shorting with the case. This would happen with any case.

Remove and reinstall the mobo from the case. This time put in a sheet of plastic or thin foam underneath the mobo. Just punch holes for the mounting screws. In addition, pay attention to the back plate to make sure it is properly grounded. If the problem persists, remove the back plate but leave the mobo insulated. If problem still persists, use plastic standoffs on all mounting screws. Let us know what happens.
