I get lots of dns timeouts (no page available) things from sites I know are there *news.google.com* for instance, and it seems as if there should be a way to decrease the speed at which it decides it is a timeout.

None of those alternate servers do anything for me. I still have random sites that just won't open that I know are there.

I've been talking to my ISP till I'm blue in the face. They've changed my servers (dns) twice, and I've tried the ones up there. They seem to think I'm nuts.

For instance, when I use one of the DNS servers they gave me, I can go to billingsgazette.com - just fine. Then I use another one and I can't go there.

Whatever DNS server I use, it seems as if there is something I can't see for whatever reason. All of these sites I can remote into my webserver and ping from my webserver (remotely hosted) and get the ip address to them and type it into firefox and go right there.

This just started today, I have a fresh install of win2k fully updated. It is also happening to my xp machine on this workgroup as well.

What are you all's thoughts?

use nslookup to see if it is actually a DNS problem.

also ping sites by IP address to see if it is a general packet loss problem.

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds
*** request to google.com timed-out

another one

nslookup news.bbc.co.uk
*** can't find address for server news.bbc.com.uk: Server Failed

another one

nslookup joemonkey.com
*** can't find address for server joemonkey.com: Server failed

ping www.cisco.com by IP address.

You should get no drops.

If you get drops, then you have something flaky with your connection. If you get no drops for 100+ packets then it is definately DNS related.

if that ain't it, then it's definately your connection...

tracert and see if there's any routing issues...

well then you don't have a DNS problem you have a severe packet loss problem. whine to your provider some more.

Also remove the router from the equation just to make sure.

It sucks you have to manually select a DNS, my isp has all of my settings on automatic and it's NEVER gone bad on me.

A buddy of mine had the same problem with Optimum Online over here in NY. They replaced all his hardware, ran line check every day and found nothing. Replace hardware on the pole and still nothing. Problem was a wire from the pole to the house that was 1/2 chewed through by some animal and when it had rained water got between the sheething and the wire. They replaced that and he was back to 12+ Mbps with no drops.

edit: and all that was over about 3 months time. He had about close to $600+ in charges he refused to pay for lack of services (Tv, Phone, Internet) lawyers involved etc...
