Help me plan my road trip (Oregon, Washington)

Hello. My wife and I are planning on taking a nice road trip to Oregon and Washington next month. In Washington, we plan on staying a couple of days in Seattle. However, I am not sure what to do while in Oregon. I know there is Portland but I am not really familiar with the other cities nor what activites we should do. Any recommendations appreciated. Thank you.

My recommendation: Stay out of oregon. Pay tribute to the musical gods in Seattle. Go visit the grave of Jimi Hendrix in. Make a quick trip by Lane Staley's old condo. Then go home. Move along folks. Nothing to see here.

If you insist on seeing Oregon you could swing by the coast. That's my best idea 😛

Coos Bay is the home of Steve Prefontaine, only the greatest American distance runner of all time. He died tragically in a car accident well before his time. My girlfriend is from Coos Bay and apparently his parents are quite friendly! 🙂

Oregon... yeah, swing by the coast, just take your time and maybe just enjoying stopping in some of the small towns along the way, Seaside, Oceanside (though that's a bit off the highway), Rockaway Beach, stop by the Tillamook Cheese Factory and get some curds.

Cheers!
Nate

Why would you want to waster your and your family's time going to Oregon and Washington? The only thing you will find there are a bunch of bitter California transplants who hate everybody. The motto of both of those states is, "Bring money, now leave!" 😛

Boooo, *hiss*! Leave, now! Oregon and Washington are fine places to live.

😛

Cheers!

Hardly.

<-- native Oregonian

Definately visit the coast, and if you have time, the mountains too. There are some great day trails up on Salmon River RD in Welches, OR, off highway 26. Big old growth. 🙂

Don't forget to take lots of pics!

Come visit a respectably sized list of AT personalities 🙂 I'm sure eberybody but the reclusive RossMAN would be happy to atleast try getting together to a PDX meet. 🙂

Most definately not. We(Oregon) don't even have a sales tax, so other than direct sales, we don't make any money off of tourists.

Depends on what you want do to. 😉
You could take a trip out towards Bend in central Oregon and cruise the gorgeous Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, then grab a beer at the Deschutes Brewery.
Or drive down the Columbia Gorge, take a hike to the top of Multnomah Falls, and have an ice cream cone when you're done.
Or check out Mt. Hood and historic Timberline Lodge.
Low tide at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach is always fun, where you can see tons of starfish, sea anemones, and the like up close. There are many beautiful beaches and quaint towns on Oregon's coast and some interesting sights like the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the Sea Lion Caves.
Crater Lake is a truly spectacular sight although it's far to the south.
Then there's Silver Falls, Smith Rock, the John Day Fossil Beds, etc...

Basically, Oregon is laden with natural beauty of all types, especially if you're willing to drive a little ways.

Portland is very clean, easy to get around in, and fun to explore, although it does not have many "tourist attractions". There are some great restaurants and decent nightlife in Portland, and a lot of natural beauty even within the city.

Best bet is to stop by a bookstore or library and check out some Oregon or Portland travel guides, and prioritize the things you want do to or see. I think this is a great place to visit. 🙂

Visit one of the many strip clubs Portland has to offer. They have the highest strip clubs/porno stores per capita in the nation. Don't forget to stop by the Acropolis for $4 steaks! 🙂

Really? Heh.. didn't know that..

However,
My wife and I are planning on taking a nice road trip

😛

Of course, his wife may be into that ......

Crater Lake is amazing.

There is also the Oregon Caves which are cool.

I don't think it is whale season for the coast... but it is very beautiful. I reccomend the Sea Lion caves. Hundreds of Sea Lions in there. Pretty neat (though it stinks something fierce! 😀).

Yup.. Just stay in your car, all comfy. 🙂

It sucks when we Oregonians go to another state. You just kinda sit there..

Nobody comes around, and it dawns on you... oh yeah, I have to pump my own gas.. lol

Cool! Do they charge for admission?

I plan to drive to Oregon some time this summer but the only destination I have in mind is Powell's Bookstore. I'd like to read other suggestions as well.
