Help me plan a party

I'm never good at this stuff, any suggestions would be very cool.

I'm having a "I got a new job" and "let's welcome my new roommate" party and I want to make sure it's a fun, memorable time. So far it's 6 guys (21+ year old) and 8 girls (21+), hopefully at the end of the day 20 people. I have a two level apartment and want the party to take place on both levels. Any ideas? Alcohol, of course, will be provided but i'm looking for activities suggestions. Music is a given, my dj friend will be spinning on his ipod, but what else, what else? Figured DDR mats and atari games would be good drunken fun... Thought the atari games might be a bit too dorky...

Actually, when it comes to alcohol, perhaps you drinkers can make a shopping list for 20+ people. I usually am a beer guy so would appreciate advice on liquor and accompaniments. I spelled that wrong, right? I'm tired!

edit: "Help MY plan a party" - proof that my brain isn't really on in the morning

Buy an inflatable kiddie pool and use it to hold a giant margarita.

With enough alcohol and good music that's all you'll need.

You could always set up some drinking games.

NO VIDEO GAMES! Only do that if you want people to remember what a drag your party was... There is a time and place for that, usually when its a small number of people.

All nerdom aside, remember your title is help me plan a party, not help me with my LAN party!

Get a keg and some make some hunch punch for the ladeez. Throw some real fruit in there to get everyone drunk faster. There are plenty of good hunch punch recipes online... I usually use.

4 Gallons Hawaiian Punch (original)
1 2-liter of sprite
1 handle of Everclear
1/5 bottle of whiskey
1 carton of OJ
then cut up oranges, apples, and pears and thow em in!

I think that DDR and atari are good by spread them around the apt. do not have the games in one spot. You want people to mingle.

Also, try and have some simple food around for people to eat as they are drinking. You could just do chips and pretzels but depending on your crowd, you might want to try something a bit "more".

There are some really cool, cute books out that that are made to be conversation starters. They are called "What If..." and on each page, they ask deep (but interesting and fun) questions that can be talked about with groups of people.
Keep those out and use them throughout the night. It is a wonderful way to get random people to mingle with each other. You can find them at most larger bookstores and are not that pricy.

There is more you can do to make your guests have a good time, but i dont know how far you want to go with being "host"!

Clean, clean, clean up before your guests arrive. Personally greet all your guests, and talk to them for a few minutes, ask them to find you if they need anything at all.

Those books sound cool - especially since I might put a note up in my building's elevator to invite other people in the building that I do not know. I'll go to b&n today to find one. Know the title of any? I want to make sure people have a swinging time, I'll go as far as I have to!

Video games should be spread out - i think the first flood will have random videos on the big screen (robot chicken on loop - things you don't have to sit down to watch) and video games will be downstairs on the 27" tv. I think i'll pass on the atari (though retro gaming is so chic!) and just have DDR going since that's a pretty social game.

Snacks - was thinking chips, humus, salsa - the usual. Any other suggestions?

I'm thinking about putting a note in the elevator in our building -"meet our new neighbor!" sorta deal so there might be some strangers and more than 20 guests... GOod idea? Bad idea? Theft is not something i'm concerned about, all our valuables will be locked up... WOuld that be awkward though or a good way to meet people? HMmm...

I think the note in the elevator would be cool. I'd have some snacks that are a little heavier too, not just the chips/salsa/hummus. Try some pizza rolls, cocktail weenies (dump them in a crockpot with a bottle of catalina dressing), and if you have a quesadilla maker, some homemade quesadillas sliced into thin strips (like 8 strips from each quesadilla). Also, tiny sandwiches cut into quarters with the crusts cut off pwn at parties. Maybe have some with chicken salad, some with pimento cheese, some with ham, etc.

Gotta give something that will soak up the alcohol and make people want to drink more :)

The books are called "If..." i am almost sure. There are about 3 of them. The word is right on the cover. the book is black and the word IF is red. there is also an IF book about relationships that would be good as well.

For food, what about cheese and a few simple crackers? there is a really easy meatball recipe that can be made a head of time and just let it simmer on the stove top or crockpot.
Make meatballs like normal (just a bit smaller) then combind equal parts of grape jelly and chili sauce (trust me, it is AMAZING) and cook them together. It is good to have a few main foods that are warm or a bit more filling than just chips.
Also, you could try and find some cool candies/chocolates (like gummie worms, candy necklaces) to put in bowls as well.
I think it would also be fun to have lots of individually wrapped fortune cookies.

Depending on how long the party lasts, it would be thoughful to have "to go" cups ready with coffee as people are leaving. If you party til dawn (or close) be prepared with donuts or mini-muffins for folks to take with them.

For a company Christmas party I was going to make meatballs and when I asked my mom for the recipe, she told me about the grape jelly and chili sauce as well. I looked at her like she was crazy, but that's how she's always made them and I love them.

we played beer pong with water cupts at my new years party. Everyone was already drunk and drinking pretty heavily anyway so playing that game with non-sticky balls and no fear of spilling cups and ruining my nice carpet, it went really well :)

Theme.

I suggest togas. Or pajama party. Anything really that would allow people to dress sexy sexxxy.

Edit: Or formal toga, that one went well for me a couple weeks ago. Black tie, cardboard cuffs, and flowing cloth. So comfortable, so half naked, so great...
