It will be used for basic tasks: internet, instant messaging, etc. but it needs to last a while. I don't know it's worth it at this price point over getting a Dell, but here's what I came up with.

Intel Pentium D 805 $130
Intel 945G motherboard $109
Corsair VS 2x512MB DDR2 667Mhz memory $77
Antec Sonata II case with SmartPower 450W power supply $90
NEC ND3550A DVD burner retail $42
Seagate 80GB 7200.9 SATA 3.0Gb/s drive $51
Windows XP Home OEM $90

Total comes to $627 shipped from NewEgg

How can I improve this?

he said it's just for basic tasks so he doesn't need a video card.

the parts you picked out looks good. is this the motherboard you picked?

No, I was thinking about the Intel 945GNTL. It was the only Intel 945G board I saw that supports the Pentium D and is ATX. Will a microATX board like that Asus fit in the Sonata II? I was thinking of going with an Intel board because I don't need to overclock this machine. I couldn't anyway without better cooling.

stick with the intel board. full size ATX are always better than micro ATX in terms of expandibility.

your selection looks very good. go ahead and make the purchase. :)
