I've been looking into getting C2D system soon. My budget is around $500-600 for what I'm buying. It's temp solution until the 8600/8900/R600 comes out. Here's what I'm looking for.

CPU - E6400 or E4300. I would like to get a 9x multiplier for easier FSB overclocking. If money allows, I may get E6420 later after April.

Motherboard - Something that FSB overclock well (not extremely well). 2 PCI-E 16x slots (can be 8x or 16x during SLI/CF), CF/SLI netural are extra bonus. Does 8x in PCI-E really matter? Like AGP 4x vs AGP 8x

RAM - Something that's at least 2 GB with ability to take FSB to PC6400 on good timing (5-5-5-12 at least?). Is Micron D9 really necessary?

GPU - I was thinking of getting EVGA 7900GS to hold me over until 8600/8900 is released in May-June and use the step-up program to move up.

Any good recommendation? Need to change my plan?

Well, with your x16x16 requirements for a motherboard, here are your SLI choices...
Asus Plus
680i
Make sure SLI is something you actually need.

As far as D9 for RAM, I'd only say its necessary if you're really pushing it over its rated speed, in your case, DDR2-800.
