Help me pick out my new TV

I want a nice new, big TV and I want to buy it soon... as in, maybe today. I'm looking to spend about $2500, give or take.

It's going in my living room, where the main viewing position (my couch) is against one wall, and the TV against the other across the room... it's a 20 foot room. I currently have a 27" TV, so you can see why I want a (much) bigger one.

I've read somewhere that you want an inch of screen for ever 3 or 4 inches away you sit from it. This led me to look into a couple 65" TVs - the main one I've looked at is the Mitsubishi WS65515 (or 315... not sure if the difference in features is worth it). I don't know a ton about TVs, though, so I want some opinions.

I do not get HD broadcast over cable... it isn't even an option in my town yet. I'm a littly hazy on the difference between HD and HD-ready, but if I'm fairly certain because of this that I'd be fine with a TV that was just HD-ready.

In any case, that's that... I want a nice big TV that's comfortable to watch from almost 20' away (probably about 17' from the screen when you figure in the depth of the TV and all that), and I'm looking to spend around $2500. I don't need a flat display, but if there's an LCD out there that's big enough and is reasonably priced I might go for it. Otherwise, I'm looking at projection TVs.

TIA

Samsung DLP

edit: if your room is big enough and you have a place to put it i would also reccomend thinking about a DLP projector and a screen, you could have 100"+ screen if you room size works for that.

You're going to drop $2500 on a TV you'll have researched less than a day?

OK...

$2500 really isn't much money when it comes to TVs that large, you can pretty much forget DLP or anything fun like that.

Have you given any thought to a projector + screen?

$2500 would go very far towards a nice native 16:9 projector + screen.

HDTV ready means that the tv can display HD content but does not have an HD Tuner incorporated into the tv. What that means is you'll have to buy/rent an HD set top(usually can rent from cable co) to convert the hd input from cable to the component inputs your tv will want. HD enable means the tv has a tuner inside of it, so you could grab an antennae plug it in and get locally broadcast hd content. NBC/cbs/fox/nbc are already broadcasting in HD format. might want to double check your area as well. Since this is a living room you're thinking about, i wouldnt go with a projector for a few reasons. first, living rooms are typically bright and projector pictures are very prone to getting washed out. secondly, you have a replacement bulb cost to consider since a tv in the common area will get used more often than a home theater movie watching setup. That said, i dont know a whole lot about projection tvs other than they are typically darker since they use projector technology. DLP projected tvs are brighter as are lcd projected. i'd shoot over to avsforums and search about. those guys are hardcore into specifics on tvs and you could get some pretty good recommendations on 65" tvs.

To start with HD differences. HD ready and HD built in is just that. You would need an HD receiver in order to get HD broadcasts and these go for about 400-500 bucks. The TV"s are HD ready are those without the reciever build in and those that are HD Built in have the reciever already.

Without being able to spend about 3000-3500 on a 65in set i think you are in the right spot as far as the mitsubishi goes. THey make an awesome TV set. Other brands you should look at are Toshiba 65h84, Samsung SP56L5HR (too high for your budget though, very nice set non the less), Sony KP-65WS510. Those would be the brands I would go with other than Mitsubishi but I certainly like the Mitsubishi sets the most. One good place to check reviews from users is www.audioreview.com. Feel free to PM me with any other questions you have and I hope this information is useful to you.

No, I've been 'researching' them for a while... looking at them in stores and what not. But I don't know a lot about the technical side of it... just what looks good to my eye. I just wanted to get some final opinions on all this before I go out and make the purchase.

Projector + screen won't work with my living room because of windows... otherwise that'd be cool.

actually the projector and screen will work. With enough lums (brightness of the picture)it won't matter. Of course at that point you may end up spending more on the projector than a TV.

Yeah... I think I'm just going to go the TV route for now, especially since I'll probably only be in this house about 3 more years. When I move into a new (bigger) house, I'll probably have a dedicated HT room, at which point I'll probably look into projectors.

So I'm taking it that the Mitsubishi is probably a good choice... I'll probably go ahead and get that, then. Thanks for the input everyone.

Jesus, don't get the Mitsu. They are good TVs, but mixed reviews on AVSForum (guy's who know their sh1t).

This is the one you want to get: http://www.hitachi.us/tv/brows...-9digital/65F710.shtml

Have no doubts, Hitachi is the leader right now in HD RPTVs. People are still happy with other brands, but if you want the absolute best, go with Hitachi.

Hmmm... well, for one, you're the first person I've seen say anything bad about the Mitsubishis... I didn't go to AVSForums, but I went to hometheaterforums and saw a lot of good things about it. Guess I'll go check out avs...

That said, I've checked around and no one within an hour of me seems to carry a larger Hitachi RPTV - just LCDs.
