Help me pick out audio equipment for my truck!

I'm looking to put some subwoofers in my 2001 Chevy Tahoe. I''m a novice when it comes to car audio so I don't really know what I need besides the subs, amp, and speakerbox. I don't want anything that will be deafeningly loud, but loud enough. Would 2 12's be good for a truck this size or do I want more/less? I have no idea how big of an amp I would need. As far as brands I heard JL audio is the best hands down - Any truth to that? I'm looking to keep the price to a minimum, no frills, but I don't want junk either. What would you guys reccomend?

Eclipse decks suck... I know this because I've played around with a friend who's had 2 different eclipse decks...

they don't even have a decent randomization or display. (IE, they scroll the song title once, and then just leave it how it comes up and stops scrolling)

I've got 2 12" rockford fosgate punch subs, a measley kenwood 600 watt amp, and a jvc mp3 deck.

I love all the components.

If scrolling and displays are what's important you shouldn't be buying Eclipse. If you want something that sounds good, its practically second to none.

Do I need a head unit or can I just use my car's stock controls? 600 watts is measly? What does it normally take to power 2 12" subs? I'm not really interested in a head unit if it isn't neccesary.

600W isn't measly but the 600W he's quoting is the peak output of his amp (which isn't exactly high-end). I'm running a single Infinity Perfect 12 in a sealed box with about 300W RMS pushed to it. Sounds great.

At any rate, if it were me I'd start with a new HU and speakers.

And yes, you can run the sub off of the existing system.

I've heard JL audio's are good also. How many watts would I want in an amp that needs to power 2 12'"s? Are the boxes relatively inexpensive? Where is a good place to buy all of this?

Definitely depends on which 12's you use. JL, as with other companies, have many different 12's with different specs. You have to match the amp to the particular sub.

Boxes.....they can be $$$$ or cheap. I bought a cheapie myself.

I've been looking at the JL audio site. I like this quote pertaining to the W3's: CarSound and Performance reviewer Brian Smith said: "The 15W3 made my inner child run screaming like a little pansy. This thing is a brutal, vicious subwoofer."

Right now I'm planning to get the speakers from JL audio. Is there any reason that I shouldn't get the amp/box from them also? I'm still looking for a good vendor to buy all this stuff at. Any reccomendations?

No reason I suppose if you have the $$$$$. Thank god you're not anywhere near me. One less idiot rattling my windows.

It all depends on how loud you want your bass, and what kind of sound quality you're looking for. Also, your budget is the #1 deciding factor.

Is $500 a reasonable budget? Most I'd be willing to part with is $700. If I can't get anywhere with that I'll probably just retire the idea.
