Help me pick out a Athlon 64 CPU/MB & LCD monitor.....

it looks like my wife wants a new computer, so guess what, she gets my 2.8c p4 rig and i am buying a athlon 64 setup. my wife wants a lcd too, so here is the dilema - i have about $500-$600 to buy a athlon 64 chip, m/b, 2x256PC3200 and an lcd monitor. i have everything else needed. the lcd does not have to be a quick response one because my wife does not game, but it needs to look good. 15-17", decent brand and more importantly for her, decent looking housing, black or silver.

for me my system will consist of either a skt 939 or skt 754 chip - whichever is giving the best bang for the buck. i really don't need anything faster than what i have as my 2.8c works fine, but since my wife is getting tired of her old 1GHz athlon system, i may as well take advantage and upgrade my setup, which is only 9 months old.

the computer i will be building for myself with be used for video/photo editing, video/audio encoding, grahics creation in both illustrator and photoshop and gaming - usually fps.

the rest of my system is:
HDD - system= u160 10k rpm 36GB scsi, secondary = 80GB 7200rpm 8MB cache
RAM - 1GB(2x512) OCZ PC3200
DVD-RW & DVD-ROM
Large Antec Case
9800Pro

i have read many reports regarding the difference between skt 754 and 939 and there aren't many benefits when going with the 939. so, should i get a skt 754 and with the money saved on the mb, get a faster 754 or go with a "slower" 939? i will probably upgrade in a year or so if needed.

thanks in advance 🙂

Go with skt 939 think it should be more future proof.
Get the 3000+ 939pin cpu
going to be hard to stay at $600 with cpu, memory, mb and lcd.

CPU and MB will be about 270-300 most places only have the oem 3000 so you'll need a hs fan also.
Memory about $90 and an LCD around $300 for a cheaper model.

See thread #1 in this forum, you can get a retail A64 2800+ socket 754 and reliable motherboard for $200. Socket754 doesn't need dual-channel so you can get one stick of 512MB PC3200 for around $70. For a little more, get a retail socket754 A64 3000+ and the total should be around $300.

If you can fit it in the budget, a second 512MB stick would help with both PhotoShop and the newest fps games.

Priced from Newegg

A64 3000 (754) $130
EPoX "EP-8KDA3J" $72
PDP 512MB $92.5
17" LCD $240
Total $534.50

Socket 754 and 939 chip prices are about the same the only issue is a lack of sub-$100 motherboards for 939.

Yep, also Mushkin is about $70 for 512MB, no reason to buy premium RAM unless overclocking.

sorry, i should have made it clearer, the 1GB of OCZ will be going into whatever machine i use, i need the 2x256 for the wifes machine since it will be the 2.8c. i have read that the sck939 uses the same hsf as the p4 i have 2 of those, one being a copper aftermarket one with 92mm fan and the other being the stock hsf.

thanks for the assistance 🙂

correct. Much more future proof and the 90nm's, if you have not already heard, oc VERY well on air and run VERY cool. 🙂

It has it on the HSF if you get the retail version. I suggest Arctic Silver polysynthetic though. 🙂

True no need BUT it will run cooler therefore increasing the lifespan of you CPU and for 11$ its worth it. 🙂

as far as o/c will go, i have problem doing it at all. i definately have the hsf combo to do it and i always use AS5. i know my ram will do ~215 @ 2-3-3 @ stock voltages so they should do ok with a little voltage modding. how does the skt 939 do if you slow the memory down to 5:4?

Dont know that, I use 1:1 ratio. 5:4 is not the best way to go about it though. Go to cpu/processor thread on anand and theres a be guide to oc'ing. Very informative on the FSB/RAM ratio 🙂
