Help me pick a Wifi router!

I'm currently using the wifi built into my rented Rogers Cable modem. It's crapp. Drops out, slows down, stops working, needs resetting all the time. I'm sick of it.

I need a good router with a range of about 40-50ft that can go through 1 concrete wall to get to my balcony (I'm in a condo).

Here's a link to this same thread on another forum, started by me

I can't decide which one I should buy. Tomato? DDWRT? What? I don't know.

I will be buying (ideally) from www.canadacomputers.com at either the Whitby or Scarborough locations. If needed I can order from www.newegg.ca

Please help me.

I heard the firmware on ASUS routers is junk and I understand that DD WRT is a pain in the ass and very difficult to install and that router does not come with it stock. What is so good about this router? Can you explain please? Thanks.

Asus firmware is decent. You can always install Merlin's version of Asus firmware.
The router is one of the most highly rated wireless N routers. It has good WiFi range and supports many connections, LAN-LAN speeds, etc.

DD-WRT isn't really difficult to setup. If you aren't sure what an option does, leave it alone. There is only a few times you need to change (WiFi password).

Besides all that has been said, that is a very nice router, and for most people, the Asus firmware is good enough.
For those that want something more, they can get Merlin, or Tomato or DD-WRT.
I like Tomato + that router, but, that is because it fits my needs well.

+1 for N66U.

Finally bit the bullet and upgraded my WNDR4700 a few months ago and couldn't be happier. I am running the Merlin fw.

Just get a Nighthawk and be done with it. It will be your router for the next decade. I've had mine since the beginning of the year and it's a geek treat.

Plus it looks like some bit of secret technology you stole from the future or something. Nice conversation piece.

I just moved to the RT-N66U from a D-Link router which was fairly nice but had random issues with dropping connections. I went with the Merlin FW which looks just like stock but has some more options. It's quite easy to use.

The router is excellent in almost every way. I've been through about 5 routers recently and this is the first one that performs almost flawlessly. My one issue is ipv6 connectivity, which appears to be a common complaint with this router if you look around. I couldn't solve it and am just sticking with ipv4 at the moment, until Comcast doubles the speed in my area for fee. Then I'll need ipv6 to work and will try researching it further. Aside from that issue, highly recommended.

Tomato has more IPv6 options. I'm using Tomato for IPv6 over FIOS right now.

I just got a new Asus router. Wifi DOA out of the box. I think Asus fired their entire QC department.
