Help me pick a new host

I need some help picking a new host for my Wordpress site. I've been on Network Solutions for five years and I've had it up to here with their performance issues. Getting hacked last year because of their permissions botch didn't help either, but I would probably stay if I wasn't getting 60-120 second load times. I've complained numerous times and all I get are form replies suggesting I move my javascript to a CDN, install a cache, and optimize my MySQL. This is a straight-up WP install that has had maybe a couple of hundred total database updates since I created it. When I query the db directly the same query can come back right away or time out. In other words they're full of crap.

So... what I have now is 50gb disk, 500-gazillion gazillibytes monthly transfer, ftp, email addys, mysql, etc. for $15/mo. roughly.

Who should I go with? Any ideas? Have until 4/10 or so to decide.

Managed or unmanaged? I've had far better luck running my own VPS than trying to deal with shitty outsourced support for basic managed webhosts.

Managed. I've looked at VPS's, but the Network Solutions packages, anyway, were a lot more expensive.

Thanks for the tips on Dreamhost and Medialayer. I'll check into both of them.

Aluvus, thanks for the link. I'm reading some of the messages on that forum and it looks like there's some good stuff in there.

Edit: I really like what I'm seeing on MediaLayer's site and in reviews.

I should mention that if you go with Dreamhost you get what you pay for. My website gets great uptime, but there are times (couple of times a year maybe) when it goes down for a few hours unexpectedly. Generally it's good, speed has improved dramatically over the past couple of years.

Anyone have any experience with Rochen Hosting? They seem to get good reviews on the web hosting forum, and their pricing plans are a little better in terms of cost vs. storage vs. bandwidth than MediaLayer.

For VPS, pick a better provider.

I'm not planning to go the VPS route just due to cost. Most of the plans I've seen are $100+/mo. I'm looking more in the $10-20/mo. range. The site is just my personal/professional blog + some server space that I used to park files for people or host demo software.

Are your needs simple enough to just use wordpress.com for the wordpress hosting, then use generic hosting for other web pages, email, ftp, etc.?

With that you get Wordpress itself handling security updates, with no effort by you.

I thought about that. I could split it up and just use cloud resources for everything else. But I kind of like having the content under my domain and control. At the price-point I'm shopping in it's worth it to have the flexibility to slap up silverlight demos or whatever with no impediments.

Ended up going with Rochen Hosting. It came down to a toss-up between them and MediaLayer. Excellent reviews for both companies, with MediaLayer probably getting the nod on a support basis. But there was enough added value in Rochen's plan, and I don't really use much support anyway. Getting set up now. Will let you guys know how it works out.

Last follow-up on this, unless something goes wrong later. So far I'm really happy with my choice of Rochen Host. Migrating my Wordpress install was a snap, and when I had two minor configuration questions submitting a support ticket got me a detailed reply in under 30 minutes. Best of all the site performance is excellent.
