I bought an HP Laserjet 4 back in 1994 or so, added a postscript module and ran it until 2010. I started getting a 50 SERVICE error on it in 2010, and suspected a bad PSU. I found an HP Laserjet 4 Plus on the sidewalk and cleaned it up and got it working, bought postscript module and maxed out its memory (those parts were dirt cheap by 2010!), and it's running now (although the LED display is very dim). I want to put the Laserjet 4 Plus downstairs and get another printer for upstairs. I have duplexed by feeding the opposite side of prints into my Laserjets, which is quite a hassle, however the results are generally excellent.
The Laserjets' text is super sharp.
That's why I shelled out the big bucks for the HP4 in the first place ($1800 with the postscript module).
I'd like my next printer to have text sharpness the equal to my Laserjets. The Laserjet's graphics are, well, what they are. I don't have a comparison, so don't know what today's monochrome laser printers' graphics are like. I value graphics reproduction.
So, what I want:
Monochrome duplexing (I have a scanner, so I can do without multifunctionality)
I think a display is probably worth it rather than a printer with no display
250 sheets at least, but of course, 500 would be nice (but not required)
I only printed ~20k prints in the 20 or so years since I've had printers, so I figure 1k prints/year is all I need in terms of a duty cycle!
I'd like super sharp text and GOOD GRAPHICS.
Would like a reasonable chance that it would last a long time, not cost a lot to run (in terms of toner).
Ethernet, I suppose. The printer will live right next to my wireless router, so I could connect it to the router by ethernet very easily. I have a couple of wifi connected laptops in addition to ethernet connected machines (all Windows), and of course I'd like to be able to print through wifi.
I figure once things are set up I won't have to change them much if at all, so super easy setup shouldn't matter much on a day to day basis, once things are set up.
Reasonable computer interface would be nice...
I'm in the habit of turning the printer off after using it. I don't know if I'll do this with my new printer, just don't know. The LJ4 wasn't energy efficient. The LJ4 Plus added Energy Star compliance, but I still have been turning it off after printing. I just don't print a lot.
Footprint or weight isn't a big deal. I'm used to the Laserjet 4/4 Plus which probably weigh near 45lb, and are pretty big. This will go where the Laserjet 4Plus sits now.
I've been looking some, but not found an obvious choice. The Brother HL-6180DW looked good until I saw a review that said the graphics were subpar in its class. There are a ton of printers out there.
OK, what do you recommend? Thanks for considered info...
