Help me pick a laptop please

Asus G1

Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2.00GHz)
15.4" Wide SXGA
2GB DDR2 667
160GB 5400rpm
DVD Super Multi
512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700
$1,798.99

Alienware Aurora m9700

AMD Turion? 64 Mobile ML34 1.8GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache
17" WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 LCD with Clearview Technology
2GB Dual Channel DDR SO-DIMM at 400MHz
160GB Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 5,400 RPM w/ 8MB Cache
8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW & 24X CD-RW Burner
256MB NVidia® GeForce? Go 7900 GS
$2,169.00

Now, the Alienware has a better video card and better display, my question is, does this justify the $370 extra for the Alienware? I am going to get one of these two laptops, its going to be for gaming, which one is the better deal, keeping in mind the extra $370?

Also, I hear a lot of people complaining about Alienware notebooks saying that they overheat and the mobo goes bad, is this true? Anyone have any bad experiences with Alienware notebooks?

Alienware are mediocre in terms of quality, it certainly isn't worth the extra money for the m9700 over the G1. Personally, I'd go with the Asus. The build quality is top notch and I think 17" notebooks are gigantic monstrosities.

The G1 seems to me a nice balance between speed and portability. And yes, the build quality will (probably) be better overall. Not to mention somewhat more tasteful!

As for 17" notebooks, the only one I'd carry is the 17" MacBook Pro, and that's because it's one of the lightest and thinnest (6.8 pounds, 1 inch thick). Even then, you need a larger carrying case and a stronger shoulder. 🙂

The Asus actually offers a larger desktop - personally I think 17" laptops are impractically huge, but even if you don't plan to carry it around, WXGA+ is a relatively low-res desktop for such a large screen.

ASUS makes the MacBook Pro.

I would back the ASUS 100%. Alienware is owned by Dell, and I would not trust a Dell laptop any further than I could chuck it - which, considering their weight, is usually not all that far.

the Asus.

better quality (probably)
lighter/smaller (more practical size and portability)
the alienware comes with a single-core turion cpu 😕
the asus has faster ram
the asus is $370 cheaper
