I am looking to create a personal website to just play around with and learn. I have no clue to start with this. I know I need to register a domain and pick a host, but is it easier to do it in some order? I plan on using PHP and mySQL on the site for sure. I would also like to create my own webmail type page if possible. Something that I just login and go to a link and it has all of my mail and the ability to send mail. I would like to have email addresses at whatever domain I choose as well, how do I go about doing this? The site will not have a ton of traffic and will only be for myself and some of my friends. I will probably register the domain at namecheap.com. I know it gets asked a lot, but what would be good host for ~$10/month. I really dont need a lot of space or anything, just good uptime and support.

Thanks,
Brian

<PA System>Paging Rossman, Paging Rossman, please come to this thread. Thank You.</PA System.>

Best bet, register your name for 9 bux, and then pay 10 bux for hosting.

I think the register site is: godaddy.com
And the host is: ripplehost.com

Should definitely suffice for a personal site, and just to learn.

i used by rossman's suggestion,
namecheap.com and ripplehost.com
ripplehost.com just went up to 9.99 per year this week i think. if you got in last week it was 4.99 per year. don't worry rossman will be here soon.
also if you do plan on using ripplehost.com could you use my referral id: 2168.
http://www.ripplehost.com/?ref=2168
if this is not allowed, please let me know and i will remove it asap.
btw, at ripplehost, the guy Alan, is great, he does fix any problems pretty quickly.

Is addaction.com worth the extra money over ripplehost? How about if the bandwidth was not an issue?

Yes, you did say $10/mo right?

AddAction.net is $9.95 for 6 months then $6.95/mo thereafter.

SEARCH for RippleHost then read about their non-existant support, you do want support right?

Thanks RossMan. Addaction it is then. $10 month was the max, but cheaper is always good. Support is very important as I dont really know what I am doing.

I am going for namecheap.com and addaction.com

Thanks,
Brian

Do either addaction or ripplehost offer multiple ftp login accounts and/or multiple domain names to different folders? My host charges up the wazoo for the first and the latter is forbidden, everything else is pretty good though.

just wanted to say that addaction is awesome...no complaints. I messed up when I registered and forgot to put in the promo code (thanks rossman), I emailed them and within 2 hours got a reply that it was fixed and my invoice had been deleted.

So far I am very happy with both addaction.com and namecheap. I set up the domains as I wanted using a add on domain, so I have my main domain and my secondary domain doints to a subdomain of the main. You CAN set multiple ftp accounts pointing to different folders and subdomains with no charge and you get 5 extra subdomains to do with what you want.

any suggestions on a host that offers more webspace, something around the 1gig area? Is addaddiction still the best bang for the buck in this case?
