I really need some space so I decided to get a new hard drive. Please give me some input. I already have a 60 gig Maxtor that runs great but somebody said the they fail easier than the WDs. I also am running my one drive at ATA-66 and am just going to put this one as the second drive on the cable so it needs to run at ATA-66 if possible.

Get the MAXTOR 60GB 7200RPM non-ATA133 model... you dont need ATA-133 anyways...

Which drive are you referring to?
All of the Maxtor drives he listed were of the D740X series, and hence all of them support ATA133.
Unless your referring to an older generation maxctor 7200RPM drive, though he didnt mention any.

Of the drives listed I'd personally go with the D740X 60GB from NewEgg, unless your quite concerned about noise in which case the D740X "quiet drive" from NewEgg... more properly known as the D740X with fluid dynamic bearings is a fine choice, though the FDB D740X's seem to have a slightly higher RMA rate then the typical ball bearing D740X drives.

As for Western Digital, I consider the 60GB D740X a better drive then the WD600BB. Comparative overall speed, with a better seak time on the D740X, and slightly quieter.
Neither drive has shown themselves to have unusually high RMA rates, soo nothing to unduly worry over there.

Eh, all of 'em are too loud. 60GB Baracuda ATAIV. ;) Since it's only for storage, performance don't matter too much.

You literally can't hear those things over the noise of an intel P4 stock cooler. It's frikkin amazing! :Q

On a sadder note, I heard my Baracuda ATAIV yesterday! :Q It was making this grinding sound when exiting out of a game. Extremley muffled, but audible. And my computer is really frikkin loud! Like, 5 fans. It was a low rumble.

P.S. sbastedo:If you change this threads name to "Help me pick a harddrive" I think more people will come and help you.

It seems to me you are more worried by reliability then speed, anyway I would go with the Maxtor D740X,it`s a good allrounder which`s fast and quiet.Maxtor in my opinion have the best customer support for RMA etc if you do happen to get a problem, remember any harddrive can fail so there`s no guarantee you will have perfect reliability with any brand. Btw I rate Maxtor up there with the best on reliabilty.

Maxtors are all well and good, but when it comes to reliability, IBM or Seagate have in my experience been great. One company you want to stay away from is Quantum. Where I work we've had more Quantums kick the bucket than any other drive I know.

AMC: I just want to point out that Quantum is Maxtor...
As for the question of the thread, why not go for a nice quiet seagate if noise is your main preocupation?

Either the first or the last option
The person who told you that Maxtors fail more often likely had a bad experience. I have had more problems with WD than I have with Maxtor, so it just goes to show.. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend WD anymore though, a year or so back WD kinda scared me (had problems with a few drives) but anymore they are fine. I have NEVER had a problem with Maxtor though!

Maxtor bought out Quantum, they are now one and the same.
And FWIW, the Maxtor D740X is in fact an original Quantum design.
It woj't be until Maxtor's next generation drive until we see another drive fully developed by Maxtor's own technicians. And another two generations from now till' we see a drive jointly developed.
