The thing is...I used to think that way...but then after 2 of my $100 watches died, I did the math and it doesn't add up. I hear Tag's are supposed to last forever so here I am. Looking for a watch that'll last 20+ year. I have a 14 yr old casio (made in Japan) that my dad bought for me in eighth grade that still works like a charm, but my dog got to it, and now the strap looks like crap :D I want the same kind durability with my next watch and I hear Tag's last a long time. I don't mind spending a little if it means this watch will last. If I keep buying cheap watches that break every year or so, the $500 doesn't seem that much now does it? ;)

Heuers like this use stock Swatch quartz movements - there is nothing about this watch that will predictably outlive a Swatch. I still don't like the idea of spending this kind of money on any quartz watch - they are fundamentally soulless IMO, and a $39 Timex will work as well, and last as long as this Heuer.

You could get a Marathon SAR, or any number of other great watches that will really hold their value and be a good start to a collection.

those are some nice watches, but I've vowed never to own a metal strap again. Ouch my hair! :D Also, I would never get a leather strap either, peeewwwww! stinks after you wet it :D I want a watch that I can be carefree about. I want to be able to wear it in the shower, go swimming, or scuba diving sometimes :) I don't want to worry about water resistance either.

are you saying quartz movement doesn't last long? if so, which one lasts the longest? without having to take the watch to the shop...ever! ?

It's easy to change straps, so don't let that be any kind of deciding factor. Generally only cheap, pressed-link bracelets will pull hair - nice solid-end-link bracelets will not. There are lots of weatherproof leather straps - my Sinn came with a nice waterproof leather strap. If you insist on a strap but can't deal with leather, I recommend a NATO or variant (like the Rhino).

In terms of the watch itself, waterproofness is easy to find. My Sinn is water resistant to 100m, and my various divers are all WR to 200m or greater.

You should never wear any watch in the shower, because the heat, combined with water, will compromise the seals over time. I wouldn't wear a $20 Casio or a $4K Rolex Sea-Dweller in the shower.

I'm not saying they won't last - if longevity is all you care about, you want a quartz watch, because they do not require servicing (though they do need batteries, unless you opt for a solar or kinetically-powered model, like those offered by Citizen and Seiko). I just don't like quartz, and it doesn't hold its value. I paid $550 for my Sinn, and I could resell it for that much or more years from now.

Interesting....I've always worn my casio in the shower..and for 14 years, it's still going strong. Granted I've only been swimming in a pool and haven't really done any scuba diving with it. But still, that's interesting, I didn't know about that. thx! :)
