Help me pick a 19" monitor

I know this topic has been posted before and I've read most of the threads. I'm looking for a 19" monitor that I can spend hours looking at. I do mostly general office apps, and network/server administration from the system but I also do some video editing and very little graphic editing. I've got an old Viewsonic P775 (must be 7-8 years old) and it's been great for me.

Here are the monitors I'm seriously considering. Any thoughts on any of them, or any that I'm leaving out? Or should I get an LCD?

Thanks.

The NEC or the Samsung. Just bought an NEC M97F for $260 and it's just excellent. Also read a lot of reviews stating that Samsung make the best monitors today, with NEC coming in second.

I've never used any of those, but from the looks and Viewsonic's reputation (in my experience) I'd probably go with NEC out of those listed.

You may want to consider the Cornerstone C910.

I have always loved NEC Multisync monitors. I knew of their quality back in the mid-1980s! I have used my 17" NEC Multisync XP17 for a number of years with little regret. Back when I made the decision to purchase a professional series monitor, there wasn't a whole lot of choices available. Today, however, appears to have more choices for less money. When it comes time to replace my timeless Multisync XP, I think I'll look good and hard before I render a decision. I'm not knocking NEC but I know I should be more objective because of the newer choice I have today.

I love my Sony CPD-G400. Do you not like Sony or Trinitrons or are they out as an option because of price?

My general opinion is that everything Sony is pretty good and too expensive for what you get.

I am looking for a 19" Monitor as well, and I have to watch how much I spend. I, too was wondering about the NEC and the Viewsonic G90f because they are both $250 (free shipping) on newegg. The 955DF is $235 on there, but has $26 shipping and i'm out of a job at the moment (I'm buying a 19 incher later). A friend of mine said his Samtron 19" 98BDF is great and runs 1600x1200 at 75Hz but he currently runs it at 1024x768. It is $184.20 at Sam's Club (For those that haven't been to that store, it is also at www.samsclub.com) and I am wondering if any of you know if it is a good monitor or if I should pay a little more and get a 955DF or comparable model?

I'm completely biased now and would say go for an LCD seeing as how I got mine ( 2 Dell 1800FP 18") a couple weeks ago and have not been happier ever. Oddly enough, I got them to replace my complete POS viewsonic P95F+B. The P95F+B had a blurry section when it went over 75Hz. In total, I had it "repaired" twice and replaced twice with the same model. After sending an email detailing just how I was going to destroy my P95F+B, Viewsonic sent me a G810 21" as a replacement. It's a decent monitor, but I already had the LCDs. Be careful though, once you go LCD, you will never want to go back to a CRT. All CRTs just seem dull and out of focus to me now..

I must say either I haven't seen a decent LCD or I have a different viewpoint. I haven't seen an LCD I've liked yet. For instance, take a thread full of text in the forum and scroll it up and down. On every LCD I've seen the text is "laggy" where a CRT keeps right up with it. We've got a Dell LCD (don't know model #) that's been traded around the office. All the execs have tried it because it's smaller and looks cool but they always go back to their CRT because they don't like the LCD.

It's amazing how the same question asked a day or two later can illicit such different answers. In some threads, you can't hear enough good things about Viewsonic, in others, Samsung, in this one it seems to be NEC. Weird!

Anyhow, I just recently bought the A90F+, after having to return two NECs due to terrible geometry IMHO, but maybe it was just the particular model or a fluke or something. The A90F+ refresh rate is only 80Hz at 1280x1040, but it does 85 easy, although out of spec. It's got a good max res of over 1700 though, but it looks great at the 1280x1040x80Sz resolution and refresh. Absolutely no flicker, and the geometry is pretty good. Only drawback I can see is that when I start it up in the morning, my taskbar is slightly covered up by about three mm. Not a big deal for the quality of the monitor, as it's bright, especially with that UltraBrite mode. BE AWARE, they changed the warrantoly on this model(a90f+)as of April 1st to one year instead of three. I got in under the deadline(bought mine on the 28th of March). They did this I think because they probably worry about people running with the ultrabrite button on all the time.

LCD's suck! Don't get one. They are hard to see, you have to adjust your line of sight because they go in and out of "focus" you have lots of dark spots. The technology just isn't here yet. But I'm sure some day they will get better. In my office I have the g90f and it's a great monitor. But the p95f+ is way better than the g90f. I have always had Viewsonics, and they are wonderful. I know you ruled out Sony, but I just purchased the Sony Trinitron CPD-E440 and it's awesome. Here is a link to a post that I recently had up. Lots of guys responded to it. It might help, you never know.Which monitor? Hope that helps.

Funny, a friend of mine has a 19" Sony trinitron and a 19" Sony LCD which are identical viewable size / res except for the fact that one's a CRT and one's an LCD... and both of us agree the CRT looks a world of a difference better than the LCD if you're anything but directly in front of it, looking straight on. Despite the fact that the CRT is older, has had repairs, etc.

I'm very happy with a P95f, btw :) no issues.

Ok, I added a few more monitors. If price were no object, I think I like the 900NF. On a value level, I think the P95f+ is the way to go. Is the 900NF worth the extra $75?

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks.

So sad that there is no more DELL P992. I'm using a P992 now and it will be my first choice if it still exists.
Now my choice will go for 900NF if you want a really nice one, if you care about the price, then go with DELL M992, it's OEM by Samsung, my parents have one so I know it's also good.

Lovin my FE991sb right now... Got it at newegg.com$268 /w free ship (and that's usually $30 for these). High resolutions, high refresh rate, vibrant color, black to match my other stuff. Even has these "Super Bright Modes" on a button and you can imagine how much that can help in games where people like to camp in dark corners.

As for the questions on the LCDs and gaming. I love mine. I bought two Dell 1800FP 18" LCDs and they rock for gaming. There is a very very slight blurring in fast motion sections, but I went and checked out my roommate's CRT while he was playing UT2003 and it is practically the same. When moving fast, I have always noticed at least a bit of blurring even on CRTs. There are no dark spots, or out of focus spots on my LCDs. I never have to change my line of sight and why would you anyways? Do you have some sort of nervous disorder that makes you move your chair around all the time? They are far brighter than any CRT I have owned and about a million times more sharp when it comes to text. It will be a very cold day in Hell when i go back to using a CRT.

As for the people who say that LCDs suck, I would guess that they either do not own one, are simply going by outdated information, or have never had to opportunity to sit down with a good LCD for awhile. You can keep all your CRTs and keep on saying that LCDs suck. I know the truth of the matter firsthand.
