Help me overclock an X2 4800+ Asus A8N-SLI-PREMIUM

Hi!

I have an X2 4800+ and an SLI Premium (Bios 1007) with 4X512MB Kingston HyperX PC-3200 2.5-3-3-7 and a 680W PSU Zalman 7000B LED

I have never overclocked anything before and I'm a bit curious now.

My idle temperature is around 36c with a Zalman 7000B LED and under heavy load I've seen it go up as high as 48c.

Can someone tell me if those are OK temperatures, and tell me how I can go about overclocking my CPU?

How far could I actually take it?

(Be very detailed plaease, new to this)

I tried the Asus AI Booster Utility yesterday and used the Performance mode @ 103%
The 4800+ now runs @ 4870

How is this utility compared to manual overclocking?

TIA!

orion,

Here is another link from anandtech that will help you OC your rig: HOW TO OC LINK WITH X2 INFO. If have the same ASUS board and you will run into some voltage issues but it should OC pretty easily. Word of caution, be careful and do not exceed 1.45V for the CPU and 2.9 for your DDR (as stated in the link). This is a good safe zone and should not shorten the life of your components that much (if at all). Another word of advice is stability is king and if you find games randomly crashing then back everything down 5% until it stops. Otherwise something fun like a mandatory OS file gets corrupted and you have to reinstall. As far as your question about ntune and aibooster they are OK. I would do it manually from the link and try and keep a 1:1 memory to cpu FSB if possible. Basically keep the memory at DDR400 and both the CPU and memory running the same bus speed. My 2 cents.

Good Luck,

Thanks guys!

I will be reading through those guides and see where they get me.

Right now I'm running 215X12 and it seems to run fine @ 2580.
I'll launch a game and see how that goes.

Thanks!
