Yeah ok, this is not the normal question, but what I need to know is if the Athlon 64 is bigger or smaller in actual physical packaging size than an Athlon XP. Thanks to anyone who can answer! :)

what do you mean.... if you are asking abou the overall size of the chip the 64 is smaller... maybe 1" square whereas the Xp is 1.5-2" to a side.... If you are asking abou the box it comes in i.e retail packaging.... not sure I've never seen an XP retail box....

Awesome!! Yes, this is what I meant - so the A64 is really that much smaller than the Athlon XP's? This helps a lot. Right now I'm tryign to judge a certain motherboard and whether with it's socket placement, my Zalman will fit on it when mounted in an Antec Aria case. With a smaller chip (and thus I assume a smaller socket) I think I might pull off the board I want.

But damn, 1 inch versus nearly two on a side? They must REALLY be cramming those pins in!

There's not much of a difference actually, if any at all. In fact I'd say they are the same size.

Oh man are you serious? Wow now I'm back where I was. Well I measured an Athlon XP and it was 50 mm per side. Any guess as to the A64?

Thanks for the links.

So after searching, it's pretty definitive - 40mm on a side for the current socket A64 chips, and 50mm on a side for the Athlon XP chips. That should help some in the way of getting one of these SiS chipset mobos to work in the Aria, but I'll have to evaluate it again.

I really don't want to go VIA, as I wanted to overclock a little. More important though I plan on keeping the integrated graphics for awhile, and the Mirage2 blows the Unichrome out of the water.

Well well well! Now that IS something! I didn't think any of the MicroATX VIA's (or any of the VIA 800 generation) supported overclocking at all - but here's this Abit! Makes me wonder abotu some of the others as well... I'll have to be looking into it. I was interested in the SiS chipsets because I knwo there's a Gigabyte, an Asus, and an Asrock that all support OCing, but like I said I have that socket problem. But this Abit seems to have enough clearance from the I/O - plus it has more voltage controls.

Wonder why Newegg doesn't stock it? Oh well, ZipZoomFly then.
